Roman Republican hoard found in Germany

Archaeologists in Saxony‑Anhalt uncovered a small but historically significant hoard of five Roman Republican silver denarii. Although Roman coins occasionally appear in northern Germany, they are almost always isolated finds with unclear origins. 

This discovery is different because all five coins were found in a tightly defined area, allowing researchers to treat them as a single deposit. 
 

One coin was minted in 148 BC, the others were minted between 82–79 BC, during the turbulent late Republic. 
 

 Roman Republican silver is extremely rare this far north; the hoard suggests early movement of Roman currency into non‑Roman communities, likely through trade, diplomacy, or itinerant contacts.

Only 19 Republican coins had previously been recorded in Saxony‑Anhalt, nearly all isolated. This is the first reliably documented hoard.
