Pompeian private banquet hall fresco revealed

Below is an article about an interesting fresco found at a private banquet hall at Pompeii.

Archaeologists have unveiled the partially reconstructed frescoed ceiling vault. (The picture below is a close up of the work.)

The fresco depicts Dionysus and Ariadne, a central myth in Greek culture.

 

I had to look up Ariadne:

Ariadne is a figure from Greek mythology, best known as the daughter of King Minos of Crete and Queen Pasiphaë.  She lived in Crete, where her father ruled and kept the Minotaur in the Labyrinth.

 When the Athenian hero Theseus came to slay the Minotaur, Ariadne gave him a ball of thread so he could find his way out of the Labyrinth after killing the beast.

 After escaping Crete with Theseus, she was left behind on the island of Naxos (accounts differ on whether Theseus betrayed her or was compelled by the gods). 

Dionysus, god of wine and revelry, found her on Naxos, fell in love, and made her his wife. 
 

Specialists built a curved support structure to reassemble the fragments, replicating the original vault shape. As more fragments are found, they can be added to the reconstruction.

 

I expect more interesting finds at Pompeii since 35-40% of the city still remains unexcavated under volcanic debris.
