So, did the Romans use an abacus for calculations?

After watching the above advertisement, I was wondering ….

Answer: The ancient Romans absolutely used the abacus, and they used it in a surprisingly sophisticated, portable form. The device was called the Roman hand‑abacus, a metal counting board with sliding beads in grooves. It appears in the archaeological record from the 1st century AD, and multiple sources confirm its widespread use in commerce, engineering, land surveying, and accounting.

A 1st‑century CE bronze abacus from Aosta, Italy was archaeological evidence.
