Al Amos
While researching the Punic Wars, I came up with the following questions. Did the various Gallic Tribes have sub-tribes? If so is there a list? For example I have found the following for the Ligurians. Ligures Transalpini Salluvii Oxybii Deciates Ligures Cisalpini Intemelii Ingauni Apuani Vagienni Salassi Taurini Laevi Marisci Are all of the following Tribes, or are any of them sub-tribes? Boii Insubres Allobroges Tricastini Vocontii Tricorii Seduni Veragri Cenomani Sallentini Thanks for any help. I'm interested in Ceasar's conquest of Gaul, so any trbal breakdowns for the time period is also appreciated. al Edited August 12, 2006 by Al Amos
Pantagathus
Al Amos, Your Ligurian list is a good breakdown. However, there is a possibility that the Oxybii & the Deciates were part of the greater Salyes which was another (more Greek) name used for the Saluvii. As to the other Gaulish tribes listed, most are attested enough to consider distinct tribes. However, there isn't enough redundancy in the sources on the Tricorii, Seduni, Veragri to treat them very definitively one way or the other.
