Communism

I think Primuspilas was fairly on the mark. In such societies, there was a matriach/patriach or group of such that made decisions on major things (time to move to new hunting grounds or whatever).

For the most part however, I think one could say the living was communal, with all hands lending themselves to the necessary tasks. If one didn't contribute, the entire clan/group/community could be at risk.

Since I was born and raised an American I think Communism is one of the worst forms of government out there, with fascism and a monarchy right up there. Granted though, for Russia at the end of World War One, that was one of the best governments they could have used, it was perfect for their country at the time. If it will work for you people go with it, if not then be against it. I just wouldn't want to be living in a communist nation, I would choose to fight until I am dead, than see America become a Communist nation, which it is likely never to be.

I tend to be moderate. I basically believe in international free markets, but I do believe in some government programs to cushion and stabilize the hectic world of laissez faire capitalism.

People usually champion either communism or capitalism as a moral ideal; to me economics is matter of what works. I think some mix of private and public activity is the most effective system. The only thing most serious economists argue over is the exact ratio of the mixtures.

In the realm of real world politics, not really. In the cloistered realm of professional "intellectuals" I think you'll still find some sympathizers.

Communism was a product of the Industrial Age. Since we're in the Post-Industrial World, it's lost much of its relevance. The emphasis has shifted from economics to culture. One could make the case that postmodern deconstructionism is Communism's step child, reared for the post-industrial age. And that particular strain of thought is quite prevalent. But that's probably a separate topic in itself.

for me communism means:

a totalitarian system of government in which a single authoritarian party controls state-owned means of production with the professed aim of establishing a stateless society...

while socialism is:

economic theory or system in which production should be for the public good rather than private profit
