Architectus

I have put together a small selection of pictures, relating to the work of the recently deceased John Davis of LEG II AVG. Nothing fancy, just an indication of the talent and knowledge that has been lost at the passing of this worthy Romanophile.   Firstly we see him with his scales in the booth of the Architectus, here he is weighing the extremely valuable lapis lazuli for crushing into a paint pigment. This is a top of the range Roman colourant , ordinary people would have to make do with th

Carnuntum - 2000 Years Old!

The cover story is about the 2000 year celebration for Carnuntum.   Exatly 2000 years ago, Carnuntum was founded by Tiberius, and just a few years later it became one of the biggest cities of the Roman Empire. The austrian television is in the process of making a documentary of Carnuntum. They invited reenactors from all over Europe to participate in this film. The same people who make this had made in the past the award winning documentary of Oetzi the Iceman, so i am sure this will be fantas

Fractals!

FRACTALS RULE THE WORLD!!!   I've just started playing with a little freeware program for making fractals. Fractal art using this program takes practically no skill, just pushing the right buttons and adjusting the right settings. Even so, the results are SERIOUSLY cool, and no one can argue about that.   Not only that, they can be given really awesome names. So far I have "Firefly", "Golden Peacock", "Hell's Staircase", "Sandstorm", "Snail Star", "Snow White Galaxy", "Sun Flame" and "Fire C

New Job/orientation

So, I had to go to orientation this morning. Had to be at the store at 6 am and then head out to New Milford. I had no clue where that was. And I was making the trip alone. Majorly nervous because I was sure I'd be lost. I get about 3 or 5 miles from the store and hit fog. The windshield fogs up terribly, so I slow down to about 20 mph (in a 45 zone) trying to figure out what's going on. It happened immediately after I hit the windshield washers, so at first I thought they did it. Then all the

Leg Sec Avg- John Davis Rip

Very sad news from the Secvnda , John Davis , their personable and vastly knowledgable Architectus has lost his life in a road accident. I have placed a Memoriam on the main Forum floor and posted a shot of John in his Auxilliary garb in the gallery. On the Secvnda site ,you can see the tributes coming in and some more images of him at various re-enactments.   http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?&a...=si&img=942     This entry is also by way of invitation, to any visitors from the S

Fellow Boozers:   Some Korean Mooney type, named Rock Lee, has invaded America. This new blister hath sattethe on the right side of God. He hathethe commanded angels. But can't seem to get that walking on water thingy right. Probably can't do the Cana bit either. Will trade him for a couple of millions of wetbacks - or one Brigantine - or yea, and I sayethe unto all y'all, Col. Rupert Rebel!   Domina Claudia, in Her wisdom, has just named me Pontifex Messimus. I wonder why?   Some Russian

Brother

A girl kneels by the bedside of her dying lover. Her tattered wings spread out behind her, the feathers unkempt and dirty. She is crying pitifully. The only one who can save her lover, and therefore herself, stands behind her, scowling at her weakness. He is the reason her lover is dying. She would be lost without the one she loves. The voice of Justice echos like thunder throughout the room.   I've watched your helpless fall from grace And the agony in your face If every cut were one less p

Another One Bites The Dust

For those of you who are knowledgeable in the art of writing long tomes...you'll agree with me (I think) that editing is worse than writing.   When one writes, you are creating your thoughts as you go along. Sure, you have an outline of some kind, and you're following along with your sources close by--in my case, already summarized in its own Word document, so that cut/paste is easy. But it's still flowing out of your head, through your fingers, and onto the screen in front of you. There's

Hopeful

Of the two applications that I put in at the beginning of last week, I got a phone call from one of them (on the same day I was going to call them to "check in"). I had forgotten to fill out my birthdate on the application, and the manager called me to ask for it. No big deal. I come inside from mowing the grass and theres another message on the machine. I almost don't answer it thinking it's the same message as before, but since there are two messages which are nearly identical, I figure it's a

Murder!

Komrades (You too DoL):   Errol Flynn was a Tasmanian. The Tasmanian cricket team is called the Tigers, ergo, A live Tasmanian Tiger has been sighted! (Really.)   It has come about that two former NYC cops were convicted of 'conspiracy to murder'. Were convicted in Federal Court. Conviction overturned because of Statute of Limitations on conspiracy. Convicts want to be set loose amongst citizenry. Feds want to charge convicted with 'murder' in state court now. What's this double jeopardy t

Just An Aside--summer Is Here!

Yesterday and today are supposed to be some of the hottest days on record. San Mateo is 20 miles south/southeast of San Francisco, and, as the crow flies, it's approximately 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean. But there's a range of 'high hills' (in other parts of the country, they'd be mountains...but they're too short for that, really) in between, so the fog and ocean breezes are affluent. It's what makes this area so amazing...the heat doesn't really come, and the fog cools us off every night

Poor Brits!

You are aware, of course, of the ill begotten rich Brit investmant bankers shuffled off to texass to answer to the magistrates for their peccadillos in re the Enron affair. Well, well founded rumors have it that the red necks are practicing with their ropes preparatory to a neck stretching party. Beer, skittles and bar-b-que will be served at the party. All s are invited.   This little bit popped up. It seems that the Department of Defense has been selling hi-tech military stuff to any and

Tidings

Komrades:   Seems that a certain party quoted from his bible over an open mike. Who knows, maybe God told him to do so in one of their recurrent chats. It is my present understanding that folks who talk to God usually become saints or are hauled off to the booby-hatch and not into the now Black House. And getting one of the heads of state attention by belching the Brookfordshiresexington formal "Yo!"   It has also come about that the party of god and freedom and liberty wants to lift the pre

Combat Wounds And Medication

The scenario is , you are on patrol 135 AD (or thereabouts) , you are an experienced mounted Auxiliary trooper with 15years service under your belt including a couple of pitched battles and some skirmishing and policing scuffles.Youve picked up a leg wound whilst intercepting some customs dodgers just north of Hadrian's Wall, nasty gash from a spear into the muscle of the calf. You are trained to report in with wounds at the double as no one wants experienced men sitting around gossiping in the

I Blame Hezbollah

So, it has now been almost 24 hours that the Perseus-Tufts database has been corrupted and non-functional.   I am like a diabetic without insulin, a manic-depressive without lithium, a colapsed lung patient without a respirator... You get the drift.   I continue to promise myself that if I ever have enough cash laying around to become philanthropic; Perseus Tufts will get it.

Excerpt From Polybius Book 6

In the Blue -vs- Red Thread, I treatised a mantra. The following is more specifically what I was refering to (written in the 2nd Century BC):   "Thus the only hope still surviving unimpaired is in themselves, and to this they resort, making the state a democracy instead of an oligarchy and assuming the responsibility for the conduct of affairs.   Then as long as some of those survive who experienced the evils of oligarchical dominion, they are well pleased with the present form of governmen
