Roman nails

Pertinax

I wondered why the Romans were so keen to take elaborate precautions to hide large amounts of un-used nails at Inchtuthil Fort when it was abandoned, the quantity of iron in these monsters is the obvious explanation. Until recently the best "rustic" shotgun barrels were made by the blacksmith from old nails , one could produce a handy number of edged weapons from a sizeable hoard of these.

The exhibit is from the Museum of Scotland which has some excellent Roman artefacts but two problems, 1: appalling display lighting -I have a lot of exhibit shots but will be posting only a handful 2: a "Rome equals England" as external oppressors attitude , I actually felt that modern devolutionary politics had poisoned the scholarship of the museum. Very sad, I like the Scots enormously.
