this shot gives you an idea of the target areas for attacking a legionary-not many.Swinging a weapon onto the head looks a possibility, but with the gladius behind the scutum you dont know where your ribs might be tickled.Perhaps this shows why peripheral wounds-shins, feet and forearms were the more commonplace. Greaves are de rigeur id say!

About the only thing you could really do would be to stab at his eyes :ph34r:

I know of descriptions of stab wounds to the mouth, for the very reason you suggest.
