  1. This question always fascinated me. Did the Egyptians put up any resistance against the Persains? I'm surprised that when large hoards of people attack Assyria and conquer it, can never breach through Egypt. It just does not seem right that they did not put up any resistance. Surely before Alexander they would have put up some line of defense to confront them.

  2. Gloat, Ramses, gloat. Remember that after Pearl Harbor, Tokyo Bay soon followed. Go Yanks, go!

Oh no, don't get me wrong Gaius I cheer for America and live in it to. The thing is they did not have any confidence and no swagger. They can talk the talk but can they get the ball in the net. This reamins to be seen.

I think America is cheated by always getting a difficlut group to play in. Even though the world may hate us, that will not stop the Uncle Sam supporters for cheering on the U.S.A.

Like in Lake Placid miracles do happen. Indeed, go YANKS!

  3. It's hard to take you seriously when you ascribe collective racial accomplishments to yourself.

Suppose I say, "Thank God we made Stonehenge, that is one thing the Egyptians will never take with them." Do you see the nationalist/racist nature of this?

Moonlapse, the day we take Stonehenge is the day all things that belong to Egypt will come back. :P

Do you think Egypt is the first nation that has been through this? Greece complains of artifacts that had been taken away by England.

If you think that beeing a nationalist/racist, means to trying to protect all things that once belonged to a nation than so be it. I remember going into King Tut's tumb and finding his treasure's hold but not him. That is a terrible thing to see, no matter what nation you are from.

All the treasures of the world have been put into the mega museums in England and the Louvre in France. The next time anyone wants to take a trip to find 'ancient' Egypt just go to France or England. If you notice some Italian and Greek treasures well... Should Artifacts Return Home?

Clearly Egypt just wants things, even though it's not certain what it already has!!

Really, if your defending England's rights to hold it then that is just the pot calling the kettle black.

  4. U.S. had a bad loss, I doubt they will advance now. The only scenario now is they have to beat Italy in the next game which is the best team in the group, and they have to beat Ghana convincingly.

They came out slow and were absolutely shallacked. :fish: They will not advance, and I don't have a problem with it because they don't deserve to. Italy and the Czech Republic will advance as they should. They did not try to score all they did was protect something that was not even there.

  5. GOAL, GOAL, GOAL, is what Australia was saying. After a lakadaisical Egyptian referee and an illadvised goal counted Australia, they went on a huge drought. In the waning minutes in the 84' 89' and 92' they scored. Cahill scored twice to put them in the lead and Aliosci sealed the deal. It was quite a thing to hear the Aussi cheers and roars. Seeing the kangaroos and people jumping up and down was quite a thing to behold.

Now, it is the Czech Republic and America next. The Americans will be cheering for America, while the world will be cheering for the Czechs. Who will win nobody knows, but hopefully it will be the best game so far.

By the way Marcel Belboa should get a hair cut. He looks like a Visigoth out there. :P

  6. Sweden will advance, the Viking power will shine throgh once again.

Through my fifteen year life I have never seen such a great World Cup. I haven't missed a game. ;) The great thing is we are just getting started.

I was wrong about Iran and the political turmoil surrounding them. They showed calss and gave Mexico, what I think, was a run for their money. Anyways tomorrow's games should be a great set.

The much awaited America vs Czeck Republic math, at least in America, is tomorrow. I remember in the Euro when Greece beat them and won the Euro.

Anyways, anyone can win except Brazil. Too many cocky sport's fans there.

  7. How humiliating Sweden was my pick. :bag: Losing to a team that had a 2,000 to 1 chance of winning the cup to a team that had a 21 to 1 chance of winning it all. Having 11 to 10 men and about 20 shots at the end is so awful. The Trinidad and Tobago coach said we will not win the cup.

Anyways, I think Trinidad played better than Sweden played bad. Sweden and England will advance but give credit to Trinidad they just wanted it more. Especially the goalkeeper.

I think the best match is next, so far through this tournament. Argentina and Cote Divoire is going to be the most balanced match yet. The best of Africa to the best of South America. One game changes everything.

    Now to the pitch!

  8. I was thinking that the Cilician pirates were sort of al Qaeda-like, but I can't think of any good Zarqawi parallel.

Don't make fun of the Cilician pirates they aren't cowards who hit and run. I think they had some idea what they were doing. However Al Qaeda and Zarqawi are mediocer at best.

  9. Can someone answer this question? How in the heck is Carthage related to the Phoenecians. If Phoenecia would be modern day Lebanon how did they find their way to Carthage, and make their home there? Were their people living there and just came under Phoenecian rule? Or was it uninhabited and just easily proclaimed a Phoenecian province.

Is that why they were so good at sea? I find it hard to believe that modern day Algeria and Tunisia is somehow linked to Lebanon.

  10. Actually a lot of the Greek religious and mathematical ideas came frome Egypt, to Greece, to Rome, to Europe. The Egyptian trinity of Isis, Osiris, and Horus were represented in Greece by Demeter, Dionysos, and Apollo respectively. Pythagoras was a pupil of the Egyptian priests, where he learned mathematics and religion.

Greek mercanaries and emigrants swayed Egypt more in the way of Greece. I think Egypt gave Greece the foundation of math and science, and the Greeks beeing very clever expanded. For example the mathematical equation of Π was described in Egypt as 3.16 later corrected by Greece as 3.14.

Here are some sites that prove it:

    Egyptian Numerals to Greek

Egyptian Heiroglyphs Influence Latin and Geek

  11. Thanks Viggen I really appreciate it. I found a cd that had all the description you told me of. I learn the words from someone and I repeat it judging my accent. However it does not tell you how to start I will try to buy it. Oh, I'm only 15 looking for a girlfriend so I'll try to go Greek. Opa!

Thank you so much, you are the man with the plan!

  12. German and Italian POW's

I can understand Italian POWs but I can't imagine German POWs. They look exactly like normal Americans. Actually German now is the most common nationality in America.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the horifying events at Nanking. It was so bad a Nazi woman actually hid some Chinese. A Japanese man said, "The general gave me a mechate, and smirking I cut off the heads of the Chinese . There is no excuse for my behaviors that day, I was just a devil."

  13. How often are World cup games decided on a penalty shoot out ?

Here is something about it Germanicus. I think if the game would be decided on a penalty shootout there will be a lot of nail biting heart stopping action. As we all know there is nothing wrong with that. Shootout

Anyways I remember when the opening game was between France and Senegal. They predicted it would not even be a competition, so the ratings were low. Senegal ended up winning 2-1. Hey the impossible can happen, watch every game you never know.

Besides it happens only once every 4 years!!!

  14. Don't make me split this off into a Roman Empire vs British Empire thread where it will then be subject to Patrician absurdities.

I hear you Moonlapse, I'm starting to miss the Greeks and Romans. At least they were compatible.

why ancient rome is a great empire than ancient greece.

    It wasn't. :P:D

  15. Look, I'm Nostradamis: This thread will go to Tartarus.

We're not trying to make fun of you, it's just it has been done so many times its unbelievable. The question is 100% opinion so you'll never be able to reach a common ground. Just arguments and not going anywhere with this will lead to confusion and mayhem.

Some problems with your facts here.

Alexander conquered half the world b y the age of thirty

    He was 21.

Caesar killed a million men in Gaul in ten years

Some accounts say this, however it has been said many times here that it was unlikely. China did not even have a million people living in a city until the 1100's. 100's of thousands but not millions in all likelyhood.

    Alexander had more men

Umm, no Caeser had more men at his disposle. Alexander's men numbered around 30,000-40,000 men while Caeser could field many men straight from Rome. If he lost it was no problem since he can easily get more, since Alexander was overseas fighting 600,000 waves of men each battle, he had to be a bit more conservative. He could field mecenaries but his main men gave him a distinct advantage. Caeser had armies of some 60,000-80,000 men depending on which battle.

Caesar had harder opposition with the Germanic Tribes and the Gaul warriors

Considering they don't use complex maneuvers they were not better than the Persians in terms of tactics.

Both were victims of Assasination who was the greater commander

Alexander was probably not assassinated. After he had been shot in Bengali with an arrow could be part of the reason. Also after his best friend Heaphestean died he felt like he had nothing to live for. Also a fever overtook him on his way to the conquest of Saudi Arabia. He was considered Zeus's son so if anyone killed him he would have to be very brave. Caeser was assassinated because there was one thing that Rome hated, and that was a master. Alexander's men were worshiped him like the pharaoh, like a God.

  16. Modern Egupt has absolutely no connection with Pharaonic Egypt - its been a Mameluk state since then, and converted to Islam. The modern state occupies the same geographical area (pretty much) as the old kingdom - but I see no basis for a claim to "own" items removed in the past.

How about Copts in Greek meaning, 'the original Egyptians?' The thing inspiring about Egypt is that it stood the test of time. These are probably the greatest treasures in the world and I just want it to be used in the best manner.

I remember the story that the Muslims tried to break down the pyramids, with a team of 7,000 men. They could not even chink it. That is what I love about Egypt, it's eternal and will remain so, as it should be. :D

  17. tflex, I think the point of the article is that he's not considered a fair arbitrator, you kiss his rear and include him in the dig or even give him credit or you don't dig. It's one thing to be the gatekeeper for proper field studies, which brings some quality control. It's quite another to usurp others work or involvement by injecting your own ego into it. I think the article was very clear about the criticism of Hawass lying in that area, it's a criticism I've read a few times.

I believe they should return the Rosetta stone, King Tut's body, and anything that is important to the Egyptians. Thank God we made the pyramids, that is one thing the Europeans will never take with them. :P

  18. Hmm, I wonder when Egypt will return Alexandria to Macedon.

Oh come now that is completely irrelevent. A lot of Greek things were predicated from Egypt, so in essense they should return that back.

If Alexandria goes back to Macedonia, then sure as heck America belongs to Britain. :P

I think Hawass is doing a good job bringing everything back.

Im confused by this did they steal them or pay for them?

Some were paid for but many more were, 'allegedly' never to return. :P

  19. what was illegal about french, british taking out those artifacts, did they happen against "THEN" any laws? Those countries were colonies and under british/french (whatever you want to pick) rule, so were was the illegal part?

What's the philosophy in this here, 'we make and you take?' It's not that the French and British are not entitled to 'some' artifacts, but you can't take another nation's glory. I don't know it they should change the current approach of how to go about the treasures. However the whole system of taking another nation's goods for plunder without second thoughts is completely backwards.

  20. No way.

Those who "stole" this artifacts are the ones who created the science of history. The locals never went digging (unless for gold) before the french and the brits started to apreciate this things.

And a modern egiptian claiming spiritual property for what other people did thousends of years ago it's unnatural but very nationalistic.

    Egiptian nationalism it's quite funny...

Silly yes, but this is going to be government sanctioned. It's not like it's just going into Islamist hands. It will be preserved. The last time I went to Egypt everything was in good condition. They don't believe in preservation methods but they keep it safe from natural things. I agree that things that have been taken from the Frecnh and British are unretreivable. Napoleon stole 5,000 peices so we can't get it all back.

Besides I would not mess with Hawass, he's good...
