  1. Does anyone know a good site from which i can choose a good picture for. Something Roman obviously, possibly republic, maybe something to do with my name (costa = rib in latin so maybe not), just something cool. i'm not that fussed. cheers VTC ps. this thread could also be useful for others who want a good picture. *hint* lots of replies *end of hint*
  2. I assume the early-middle part is specific to the punic wars and the macedonian and an almighty list of fascinating wars and battles. All of which was the expansion of Rome. 147bc carthage macedon greece and illyria all became principalities around now. Great Poll! vtc
  3. It is a difficult question. Can any legion be specifically better than another, or is it the general that leads them or the fights they get in? If I had to choose one. The 'prima gena' or the 'first born' was the famous legion that Gaius Marius had. The lgion went to Numidia and all over the place. This was a legion that also changed the Romans and in turn the world forever. This legion is like the root of all other good legions. vtc
  4. Do you thinks that gauls, carthaginians, greeks, etc would have been abused or cornered off in their own parts of a city? Other religions were certainly shunned but were they racially abused? I'm pretty sure it would have happened but i cant find any ancient text. vtc
  5. What If instead of the gladii the Romans had long swords. I suppose their reach would have increased and slash attack would have been added to their different array of attacks. The weight of a longer sword would have it's downpoints but if a soldier was brought up with such a heavy weapon I'm sure they wouuld get on with it. Would it have completely changed their tactics or would it have enhanced their abilties? Any thoughts. vtc
  6. I have read an account that the streets of Rome crawled with raping theiving crooks called raptores on the surface they were random attacks undergrouind it was an ordered attempt on ruining rome Is what i have read baloney did raptores exist?
  7. Imagine this: You are a happy cisalpine gaul who in his one lifetime You are born into a cosy rurally bound gaul family Your village is torn aaprt and ruined by invading romans You are beaten and your parents are killed You are put into petty slavery in a roman villa You are beaten and treated like filth Your life does begin to settle but you burn with fury You find a female/male slave and things are going fine Your master gets rid of that slave Your master and the villa is destroyed by invading Hannibal and you are free I'll stop there. Now after Hannibal has done his thing and defeated most of Rome what happened to cisalpine. He must have marched through it and he must have had some resistance or done something it just doesn't make sense to leave your back exposed. The cisalpine people msut have now found freedom(ish). Did the romans just waltz back in and claim it again? If i have made mistakes, errors, given a misguided fact or whatever plese tell me cheers
  8. I see what you mean, it does seem very illogical for a warring general to be doing everything at once. I suppose if the Carthaginian efforts were more driven they would have succeeded, yet i am talking about the carthagian senate being driven not generals, it is the politics behind a warthat can win or lose it. I was interested in you saying that Maharbal wanted to take cavalry to Rome, I thought that their cavlry resources were low and predominantly light militia cavalry or cisalpine recruits. Also it would have been hard to seige and effectively capture Rome if it was defiant with cavalry. Ihave no doubt that hannibal was a genius but a military one not a political one. I think I side with you.
  9. My title is a bit vague, I am specifically talking about the early to middle years of the republican army. I'm still a bit vague but hopefully you will all understand. p.s. If someone else has posted something like this i'm sorry
  10. I stumbled across the name Gaius Popillius Laenas and read an interesting article on what he did does nayone knoe anything else about him? if so please post
  11. A pre-marius legionary, to be indebted to nothing but the bonds of freindship in a unit of fellow comrades a life i miss today
  12. Primus Pilus: My mistake, sorry. Spittle: no there is nothing in wa history, but im english born and lived there a long time, ive went to trier, verulanium and rome so i got interested through them, when moved here i missed roman stuff. Germanicus: thanks for that
  13. 1 general, eh. If it was for real winning: CAESER but everyone loves caesar maybe for determination SCIPIO or maybe someone obscurer like LEPIDUS or MACEDONICUS Good topic, do a poll. twould be gr8
  14. I mourn for the lost bok of Tacitus and the missing booksof livy, I would also like to add the petty scholar (whos name has esacped me) of Marcus Aemillius lepidus who drew a line with a stick around King Antiochus the 2nd (i think). He sounds like a man worth recording with more grandeur but most of his biographys were destroyed by Sulla. Please correct me if im wrong or you can remember the name of his biographer? BTW fantastic topic, you should really do a poll
  15. I was wondering if the julii or grachii or fulvii or etc. had a symbol, Rome Total War (best game ever) suggests it does but i didnt think families did, just legions. :king:
  16. The first episode aired in Perth australia on thurs 14th dec and i missed it can you believe it, i missed it? 18. So many must of been given out because citizens could be easily saved. does this count for seiges where the besieged army is saving all its citizens? Caesar got one eh, why and how? which commanding officer, do you mean a general or lesser? thanks for the answers
  19. A pilum was thrownat 60 degrees so it could come down on the enemy from almost vertical, that way a man would have to raise his shield very high, and the weight of the pilum would be accentuated by gravity, this slowed an attacking wave and killed many more. you are right about 45 degrees but the pilum comes in front on so many more would of survived. I thought as much. it seems a long way to throw considering olympic throwers reach 80 metres The book i read it in is usually very correct so thank you for proving this wrong. I did measure out 100 metres and got a 3kilo weight to throw and i could onlly get it 30metres
  20. It was largely residential subura prior to the fire of AD 64. Nero's Domus Aurea was built in the general vicinity after the fire and an artificial lake was created with gardens and such. After Nero's death, some of the Domus was removed and the lake was filled in to make room for the amphitheatre. thanks for that, i never thought it cold ever of been resiedntial
  21. Could you please add a time zone changer to the siteas here in australia i can only read the gmt time? it doesnt matter if you cant though.
  22. In particular at 250bc to 100bc i wondered what was placed at the stop of the colisseum its a large structure so what was there. I guess a market or a predecessing arena. any idea?
  23. Hey everyone, I''m sort of new and live in Perth, australia, i moved a couple of weeks ago and its cool, I love the site and the feedback. I'm a writer of both factual based novels and fictional, however my work has been semisuccesful. edit:found it! notice it's not me because it is december 8 and my birthday is one day before so i would be recovering from drinking that day.
  24. Who were allowed these wreaths? What really were they? Who could give them out? How may were there? Did they give you priveleges? Did any famous romans recieve them? Please answer these questions
  25. Although the likely spring to mind, Caesar, Scipio, Augustus, Belisarius i would like to mention Macedonius, whose first names escape me. he succesfully planned and coordinated Illyria, Macedon and The League of Greek Cities downfall (with help) he seems to of been forgotten, even though there were very little monumentous battles except for maybe corinth, i stronly believe these annexations as a result of Macedonius were vital for the forging of Rome. Please post back if you agree that he should be put with the greats.
