  1. Fafnir, its called "The Fall of Reach", one of the Halo books, I just finished reading it.

LMAO, wouldnt those odds be more like 6 to 30,000? Interesting you chose Halo, there's the Spartan-II cyborg (or whatever it is XD) and the Spartans at Thermopylae.

Oh and bernstein, if the Greeks used half-circle or circle formations with their hoplite soldiers i dont think they would have been very effective...

A reason why the Phalanx was in a tight box formation was because the troops in the back could deflect arrows, javelins, and the like with their pike/spear, since their pike/spear was at about a 45 degree angle. Also, the soldiers in the back usually push the troops in the front, and they are also there as reserves, but i mean whats the chances that a soldier in the front of a phalanx would die. ;)

Also, to create a circle formation with spearmen would be very difficult to accomplish... maybe the Spartans could have had the training for that... wait how would they know which way to march in a circle formation? lol

If there was a battle with this configuration for a phalanx, i believe the hoplites were probably just confused.

  2. Lol, they had to be VERY creative to think of a "Romans in Space" game. Concept art looks intriguing, though i think the world would look much different if we were still controlled by the Roman Empire...

Hey did they say anything about a Coliseum in that game? :D

  3. While it is easier to compare Napoleon's Empire to Hitler's, or the Mongol Empire to the Czar's Empire (Russia), there may be several instances where history repeats itself in the United States from Rome. Perhaps our Manifest Destiny to reach the Pacific Ocean while we were in our exapansion era could be compared to the exapansion of the Romans?

And as primuspilus would say, welcome to the forum Londiniumishome. :D

  4. Religion correlates to believing in a higher being because... the dictionary says so. :)

By the way, i despise when people try and prove me wrong about Norse Mythology. I am an Asatru, i spend a good portion of my life serving my gods, and learning about them. Fafnir never had a direct relation with Thor... so please dont make things up about my religion, thank you.

EDIT: I said Hail Thor because Thor is a Norse god that most people are familiar with. Im closely tied with the god Fafnir, he is the one i chose to worship.

  5. Two things. First, P. Clodius mentioned...

When facing an enemy on one front it was reported that a large enemy force was approaching from the rear, legions were detached, marched 25 miles, defeated the enemy, marched 25 miles back to defeat the enemy they were facing the next morning. 50 miles and two crushing victories! How much more mobile can an army be?

I know this is a little off the time period (10 Centuries or so) but Harold's armies in England marched many miles to fight the Vikings at Stamford Bridge up in northern England, then marched back to southern England in a few days time to fight the Normans at the Battle of Hastings. (and lose...) I dont know if thats farther than what you stated, but its still quite mobile.

    Secondly, TonyGee stated...

The phalanx was next to useless unless used on flat open ground, or thats what ive always thought.

Phalanxes were useful on open ground, yes, but their maximum efficiency was definately when they were in an enclosed area where they couldnt be flanked, i.e. mountain passes, towns, etc. (Theres that one instance of a few hundred Spartan warriors killing thousands upon thousands of Persians in a mountain pass... forgot the dates and stuff of that, saw it on the History Channel) The knowledge of Phalanxes working well in towns pretty much comes from my experience in Rome Total War though. ;)

  6. I chose Military Affairs, its definately the reason why i believe the Romans were so great.

"Necessity knows no law except to conquer." :P

An off note, and i know im late to this, i happen to be a Neo-Pagan as well, though different from Zeke. I mentioned earlier that im part of the Asatru religion, which focuses on the Norse Gods. My screen name (Fafnir) is one of the less-famous Norse Gods.

Im not treated differently from Christians my age, though i have noticed that some of my friends' parents dont let me hang out with them much anymore. ;)

  7. I'm with paolo, America for me. Im lacking any foreign language (save some Spanish i picked up from listening to Mexicans), and why would i want to go north to America Jr.? ;)

Just kidding Canadians, i love your country. Its so clean! Well, atleast from what i saw. (Some small border towns and Quebec City)

  8. but otherwise it would definitely be the chinese because of their legendary warriors, superior tactics and phenominal fighting skill.

Okay, _usually_ a single warrior wouldnt be that big of a factor in a battle... There are some exceptions, Manfred von Richthoven, a.k.a. the Red Baron for one...

I want you to tell me what tactics the Chinese used that would possibly be efficient against the Romans...

Saying the Chinese have phenominal fighting skills seems kind of biased. :)

  9. Well i could argue for the Romans, but it would be too disrespectful towards the Chinese. :)

Might i ask how a full scale war could be fought if you didnt have logistics? I always thought that "full scale war" meant the disruption of trade, supply routes, a long with the orthodox-style battles.

Im taking info from both forums to get an unbiased picture, but so far, China is kickin your *** due to the lack of info on your side.

Replying to the above quote, the members of this forum dont need to prove anything to you that Rome could defeat the Han Dynasty in war, if you want information, check out this site. Its full of information that could help you determine your biased outcome.

Furthermore... i dont know how the Chinese fought war at this time, nor is it of much intrest to me...

  10. Yes, we can't forget our pagan Winter Solstice folks... Perhaps the oldest of the late December holidays.  (Is it older than Chanukah?)

Still, I prefer the good old-fashioned wishing of a Merry Christmas, and to hell with political correctness.  May I receive a lump of coal in my stocking for being so insensitive.  :)

Lol primuspilus, i happen to be a member of the Asatru religion, so watch yourself...
