  1. Same thing happens to me, every single time I travel alone.

Once they told me they found a metal object in my bag that looked like it might be (used as) a weapon. It wasn't, but I could understand it might look that way on the scan. But as I was in a foul mood from being searched twice already I thought well it's your job, you go and find it. I was stunned when they gave up after a few cursory glances in the wrong pockets, and discretely left the offending object in the waiting area before boarding, along with a sarcastic note.

  2. What I haven't described is the sheer frustration of trying to run a local band. The image of a bunch of mates getting together and making music for the fun of it is a ridiculous notion that belongs to american youth fantasies. The reality was you spent ages trying to find someone who could actually play, then watch them fall under the spell of girlfriends or motorbikes as you desperately tried to stop the band falling apart because we weren't playing someones favourite style of music.

Don't get me wrong. I did go professional in the end, for three short years, and I do make a lot of tongue-in-cheek comments about my 'rock star' status. It was tough going. Lots of travelling in vans barely held together by rust, late nights, ungrateful promoters and venue owners, and a population of people who wanted to hear something else.

And this is how it should be. Sheer merit and stubborn determination is what makes great music (even if there's nobody there to hear it ;)).

It's just too easy these days, hence the tepid, unimaginative music you hear almost everywhere.

You have my respect for winging it old school. B)

  3. A shabby and unloved youngster picked out his DVD from the selection at the library and put his coins into the machine for the ticket to allow him to take the item home for a week. He ambled toward the security guard with a look of bemused outrage on his face.

What is this? Libraries in England charge patrons money to borrow DVDs? Like Blockbuster Video stores? Do all libraries in England now do this, or just yours? I think St. Paul's public library in Michigan was considering doing this, but it's not something one would normally see here in the States.

In fact, I think there would be a tax-payer's revolt (and rightfully so), if Long Island public libraries ever tried charging money to borrow library materials. We do charge overdue fines, though, if the DVDs aren't brought back on time.

I think your library should refund that kid his 50 pence, at the very least.

Pretty standard fare for Europe. If you're unlucky they make you pay for borrowing individual books as well, and that's apart from the annual membership fee of course.

edit: and the kid shouldn't get his money back for being an idiot :P

  4. Congrats, and welcome to the real world :(

It sucks, I know, I've been there. Try and see if you can get some short term grants, to do a bit of research for a few months or half a year, so you can develop a plan for a PhD project, maybe write a general outline article. This will improve your chances when you do find an opening somewhere, it shows you're serious about it. If that doesn't work find some job to keep you alive and just keep trying to get in. It takes determination and still you may fail, but it's not impossible.

    Good luck :)

  5. You know, I agree with you on the terms of racism still happening to the blacks because they kind of want it to, but there is one mistake I saw, but it's kind of minor. Techinically Barack Obama is the 45th president because for 12 minutes Joe Biden was the 44th president. It was delayed for 12 minutes before Obama took his oath and, according to the rules, Joe Biden stepped in as president for 12 minutes because that's what the vice president was supposed to do. Plus, the singer who delayed it wasn't a good one either.

As I understood it Obama became president at noon, regardless of the oath.

  6. But thats just it. Politicians loved the Treaty of Lisbon because it gave them a higher level of power of attain, a new arena, not to mention whatever promises, deals, or agreements had been made behind closed doors - you can't tell me that politicians don't do that.

The people however are nationalistic. We like being whatever nationality we are, and after all the struggles of the past to achieve the peace we have in europe, why should we be willing to sit there with fingers in our ears, eyes closed, while politicians take away our national identity?

Sorry, I just can't accept it. And if giovernments have a mandate from the people, why was it necessary to hold a referendum at all? I notice that the promised referendum in britain is being swept under the carpet and forgotten. Someone wants me to forget I'm british. Sorry, no, no politician has the right to do that unless he asks me for my permission. Thats my my view on it.

It wasn't necessary. I guess some governments figured it would be a nice gesture, only to have it blow up in their face. But the fact remains that the people had little or no idea what they were voting on, and voted out of a general dissatisfaction and hesitation regarding the EU as a whole. A valid concern, but not the issue at hand.

I understand your objections, and I share a lot of them, but there will be no going back on this one.

  7. If you let politicians make 'important' decisions, just wait and see how many decisions become 'important'. In no way whatsoever do you let a politician make decisions without accountability. Thats the whole point of democracy. The people have a part (at whatever level) in the decision making process.

The politicians, who were largely in favour of the treaty, already had the mandate of the people.
