  1. Sad news: Mick Aston of Time Team fame has passed away. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23041568 Condolences to his family and friends.
  2. I've noticed that since I started this topic there are even more books on Constantine being published. I'm even thinking of doing one myself at some point! I'm just not sure what angle to take.
  3. Hi all. Just to let everyone know that I've linked my own blog to UNRV via the 'external blogs' link in the Blog section. It might not be earth-shattering, but I enjoy it!
  4. Funny you should ask. I'm copyediting a new book on the army from 285-361. When more is known about the publishing date - which should be this year - I'll let you know.
  5. Please, somebody, put me out of my misery ...
  6. That's enough people. Give me a break! Don't you think I've been Pun-ished enough?? Thanks to you lot I've had to make an appointment to see the men in the white suits ...
  7. Right, that does it: you're all in my Black Book. Come the revolution ...
  8. Please, don't encourage him. Where will it all end????
  9. An apology is not enough: we demand blood!!
  10. I agree, what a shame that it costs a bomb! "The Oxford Handbook of Late Antiquity" $163.32 (Down from $175) "Western Perspectives on the Mediterranean" $110 "The Role of the Bishop in Late Antiquity" $130 To say this is annoying is an understatement. Especially when there's: "A History of the Roman World: 753 to 146 BC" $27.45
  11. The Oxford Handbook of Late Antiquity looks interesting ...
  12. If you mean the Equites Dalmatae as listed in the Notitia Dignitatum, there is little information and it is usually assumed that they were equipped with the same clothing etc as other Late Roman cavalry units. Have a look at 'Late Roman Cavalryman AD 236-565', by Simon MacDowall, or 'Roman Military Clothing (3): AD 400-640' by Raffaele D'Amato and Graham Sumner: they might have some more detailed information - and at least extensive bibliographies!
  13. A bit of a generalization there. Welsh women up to the English conquest were given legal rights unheard of by the Anglo-Normans.
  14. Good review Ursus. Although I did some Latin at University - enough to get me through simple things such as Chronicles - I need a refresher course as my brain is going rusty! This might be just the thing ...
  15. I don't think there is. Although Zosimus covered the sack, the relevant part of his work has been lost. See: Zosimus, 1814 Translation (Ridley's text ends at the same point).
  16. A couple of years ago I asked members for suggestions regarding what biographies they would like to see written. Many thanks for your ideas! Reading recent reviews I've noticed the slow emergence of a recurring phrase, something along the lines of: 'This book does little to add to our knowledge of a man who is already covered extensively in the literature'. With this in mind, what is the view of members? Is there any historical person where, if a new 'biography' was available, you'd just ignore it completely? I must admit I'm half-expecting the response to be 'Hannibal', but maybe I am just being pessimistic!
  17. Good find: I've not seen that before, despite several years of online searching.

Anti-aging creams? Not me: I go straight to the 'pictures in attic' section at Boots!

Thanks for the sympathy. I rang up Phil and said that as Aetius is three months late, the next manuscript will be as well. Talk about panic ....

    What's the book in July?

    Ian

  19. What's the title of the Finnish book, please?? The Celtic roots of English. Ed. by Markku Filppula, Juhani Klemola, and Heli Pitk
  20. What's the title of the Finnish book, please??
  21. Hello folks, sorry for the delay, but Aetius is now set for publication in mid-April. Unfortunately, it's a 'publisher' thing and there's nothing I can do except apologise. After the long wait I just hope people aren't disappointed!
  22. Does this mean you're older than me now?? Happy birthday mate.
