  1. I thought they used pumice stone to clean themselves, as well as the public baths, where they had slaves to rub the dirt off when they were being steamed - which actually worked quite well. I also believe there were different parts to public baths, so there were probably set areas for cleaning and swimming etc. ~I think the Ancient Britons actually used soap though, but I never verified the information.
  2. Well, the most famous moment in New Zealand soccer history happened against Italy yesterday...somehow, we actually tied with Italy, and we managed to score a goal only 7 minutes into the game. If we can beat Paraguay next match, we can actually advance.
  3. Well then, it looks like I shall add 20 more books to my 'to read' list.
  4. Hmm, I never noticed that with the titles before. I just hope they are not too repetitive, because that can destroy a series for me. ~Sounds like an interesting book. I just wish I had the time to read the backlog I have of good books that have been suggested to me!
  5. And are the stories reoccurring in these 21 titles? ~I have never heard of those books. What aspect of Claudius do they cover?
  6. No one in group E has got a win yet. I would have thought that Italy would have beaten Paraguay hands down.
  7. I shall read it with much vigor then, as I know little of the Pompey brothers in depth.
  8. I have just finished the first chapter, and I am so far enjoying it. I like the character development in the story so far, and I like the main character. The storyline also looks good, and I hope to be seeing more of Dracus, for I like stories with old, grizzled war veterans. I was unsure about the chapter ending though, and I personally do not like the last line "But Baku wasn
  9. How has Italy been doing so far? I have yet to hear about them.
  10. After the Teotoberg forest incident, he was never the same... ~ He would bang on the door shouting "Varus, give me back my legions". ~ He did not cut his hair and beard for months afterwards. ~ He was so paranoid that he ordered his guards to patrol Rome at night to protect him from barbarians. ~ He then also spent hoards of money on public games to keep everyone happy, instead of spending more money on bringing more legions into service. To sum up, I do believe he went a bit insane in the end. I know he was old and all that, but when three legions are wiped out, the obvious thing to do would be to reimburse them to keep the strain off the army, but the legions stayed at 25 for a good period after Teutoberg forest. No rational leader would let that happen.
  11. Does the series get repetitive after a while? I understand there are a lot of books in the series.
  12. I can not believe I missed this thread back in April... ~I like the Falco series, although I have not had time to read the first novel, which I very much enjoyed. She gives an interesting twist on things, and provides originality from all those Roman legion novels. I think the character development is the best part of the books she writes.
  13. Yes, IF. I do not believe those legions should ever have been sent on campaign with Rome's military strength so low. Those three legions should never have gone on campaign in the first place, because as we saw, they needed heavy axillary support in Germania. I think the entire campaign was doomed, especially since they were lead by such a naive commander. The fact the Romans before the battle were in such a long column was just asking for trouble. But yes, I agree that if they had succeeded, it would have been better. But it was obvious they would not succeed (in my opinion). ~I agree with that. The desert was not the best position for a Roman army, as it was too open for the Parthian tactics of attack. If Rome has gone further into the East, I am certain it would have only lead to ruin. Carrhae shows us that even the strongest Roman army can be defeated relatively easily in the east.
  14. I heard they drew with Algeria. I was very surprised that happened. ~I was very annoyed to see that Serbia won against Germany 1 nil, and quite easily I thought.
  15. I think it is possible he was assassinated, but let us not forget that he was a drunk and could easily have killed himself - after all, he thought he was a god.
  16. To be honest I think Augustus was always a bit of a nut. I never liked him, and I think he went a little soft in the head after Teotoberg forest.
  17. To be honest I had not really noticed, but now that you mention it - it is a lot faster
  18. That is odd, as I believe that most Romans were cremated. ~A lead coffin would be very heavy though wouldn't it? It seems an unusual metal to use for a coffin in my opinion...
  19. I was very surprised about that, as I heard Spain were the favorites to win...
  20. People are bizarre, and the Germans are just like all other people, although I admit, I have always believed Bavarian's to be boring people, as they always have such annoying sayings (such as, "It is so because it is so").
  21. Damn, I have not seen the Brazil V North Korea game. I always thought NK were not good soccer players? ~I am personally routing for Germany to win, although I have no idea what they are doing.
  22. We scored our first shot and drew with Slovakia today. I am proud to be a New Zealander!
  23. Can we take on multiple characters, or is that forbidden?
