  1. I suspect it did very well. It would be pretty easy to defeat however with a slight upward angle to the stab, which would slip between the plates, I would think.
  2. I've never heard of that. I think that the Roman officers in the legions had special rings that they wore, but I don't know anything about citizen rings.
  3. A girl kneels by the bedside of her dying lover. Her tattered wings spread out behind her, the feathers unkempt and dirty. She is crying pitifully. The only one who can save her lover, and therefore herself, stands behind her, scowling at her weakness. He is the reason her lover is dying. She would be lost without the one she loves. The voice of Justice echos like thunder throughout the room. I've watched your helpless fall from grace And the agony in your face If every cut were one less pain you had to bear; I'd cut myself a thousand times to save you And as I watch you slip away And this is justice done? But I was young! The loss of innocence that you hate was caused by you in a time of rage Those that died were no longer pure Because you stole their purity Look at her; she is the last, crying for the one you would not save If every cut were one less pain you had to bear; I'd cut myself a thousand times to save you Will you not help her? Will you turn away and let her die by the suffering you caused to save her kind? I am the cause of all I hate a thousand times Tell me now! Is it not too late to save her? It is never too late Copyright 2006 KMcJ
  4. I suppose. I just didn't think that it would happen with the frequency that it seems to have happened in Rome Although it makes sense that the building could become so unstable that it falls even if the stone doesn't "burn"

Thanks!! Lol I've never done commissions. There isn't much of a market for it around here and online business deals make me nervous.
  6. HAHAHA!! I wonder how these towns get such names? Is it someone's idea of a joke? Or is it a case of changing word meaning?
  7. I believe it's simple human nature. After all, people nowadays tend to panic as well. Sure, the reasons for the panic, and the symptoms of it, have changed with the times, but still, it is there.
  8. [uPDATE] I GOT THE JOB!!! YAY!! Now I have to go in tomorrow morning to get directions to go to orientation on Saturday morning...8 till 2... I'm not looking forward to orientation but... I GOT THE JOB!!!
  9. I've always wondered this, as it is a well known fact that parts of Rome were destroyed by fire, including the Senate building on several occasions. Now, wooden buildings aside, how did this happen? Many of the buildings which were destroyed were built of marble or concrete, yet they were "burnt to the ground". How is it possible for marble to be burned completly? Or was it a case of "the building burnt so now the townspeople grab all of the leftover materials for their own use"?
  10. Well it's known that prisoners of war were taken as slaves, so I believe it's safe to assume that some of them were given medical care. As for the statistics of this happening, well I don't think it would have happened in great percentages, because the Romans would be concentrating their efforts on other Romans. They'd need a *lot* of supplies just do deal with their own troops.
  11. But how bad was it really, compared to other things like the battle axe? If you survived a tangle with an axe you would be pretty messed up...a falx or spear could do some serious damage too, depending on how it was employed. I'd say it'd be "six to one half dozen to the other" when comparing types of wounds. I say it's a real shame most of this knowledge got lost, because IMO alot of it works better than it's modern counterpart.
  12. Thanks! Lol. My new website has over 200 posts in a week and a half (that is a huge step up from the old one which had 200 posts in...a year)
  13. I think that would be very difficult, and I'm not sure that it was actually done, because you would think that the guy in front would pull the guy behind out of rank, and the guy behind would hold the guy in front back (not to mention you would not have a hand left to hold your scutum) However I'd imagine a fallen legionary might be pulled off the field by his scabbard, similar to modern eppaulets (spelling?)
  14. Of the two applications that I put in at the beginning of last week, I got a phone call from one of them (on the same day I was going to call them to "check in"). I had forgotten to fill out my birthdate on the application, and the manager called me to ask for it. No big deal. I come inside from mowing the grass and theres another message on the machine. I almost don't answer it thinking it's the same message as before, but since there are two messages which are nearly identical, I figure it's a new one and not a malfunction so I call her back. I got an interview that same day. She said I'd probably know Monday or Tuesday. It's now Wednesday, and I haven't heard, so I called her back. She says she's still waiting for approval from the central office. Now this, I can believe, because she seems to sincerely want to hire me and I know that background checks for 18 yr olds take a long time (my mom also works at a franchise). So I'm hoping I'll know tomorrow, because orientation is Saturday so they had better get their backsides in gear and let me know Turns out it's not night shift though, its "all shifts", which means that I could be working...all sorts of funny hours. I'm a bit apprehensive about this, but not totally. I think that while it may be a pain, it will be kind of fun. My adventuresome spirit sees this as a possible opportunity for an interesting experience. ::crosses her fingers. and her toes:: I really need this job. I still haven't heard back from the place that "lost" my application. Although after talking to the manager there, my mom says I probably wouldn't want to work there anyway (apparently someone in authority who shall remain nameless said "what's she need a job for anyway? She has a car, a place to live, and no bills to pay" My mom can't afford to keep me forever ya know lady.) Besides that, their parking lot is aweful and I fear for my low profile tires every time I have to drive through it I went to the mall and poked around through the bookstore. Now this bookstore is expensive, and so what I do is keep a little notebook in my pocket, take down the titles of the books I want, go home, and order them off of Amazon for a third the price I did find, on their "bargain books" rack, a large and very beautiful volume entitled Ancient Rome: People and Places. It is actually sewn, not glued, and its glossy pages are chock full of gorgeous pictures! There is more text than I first realized, and it is rather slow reading as I am constantly distracted by the pretty pictures, but it contains a wealth of information. One thing that irks me about it though, is that it does not have a single page devoted to the Roman military. It may be part of a series, in which case the military would be covered in another, similar book which I would love to aquire. But otherwise, I cannot believe the author left out that very important aspect of Roman history! The next two in the Eagle series are also headed my way from Amazon, and I cannot wait to recieve them. They were shipped yesterday so I should have them soon. UNRV should have three new reviews, in relatively short order! Not long ago I was promoted to Patrician status! :punk: This made my day, even if I was slightly disappointed by not yet having found out that I have a job

This *almost* won choice of show in the SCHS art competition. I wouldn't have cared if I didn't even come close, but since I did come so close I am a little sad. Acrylics on a canvas panel. This only took about a week, it utilizes surprisingly simple techniques.

  16. That's true, I was thinking of something like that but I couldn't think of how to put it into words
  17. Ah. Now see, I would call that "discipline". And I'd define "morale" as "good spirits"
  18. ::grins:: I like this guy! How is it, that being that rough on everyone would *improve* morale though? I don't quite get that.
  19. I love the first in the Eagle series (Under the Eagle) by Simon Scarrow, and and the next 2 or 3 (I forget) in the series should be arriving soon, Amazon just shipped them today
  20. There are myriad articles on the main site that should help you out You should probably talk about their influence on the world, their architcture, political system, and of course their amy! Size of empire doesn't say as much as those things. BTW are you Rosamund? If so I'm Dania
  21. I'm sure that some of that was the case. There's the ingrained, learned behavior thing to. I say "bless you" when someone sneezes because it's expected. I really don't know the original reasoning behind it. But as for the superstition thing, I think that alot of Roman "religion" was "superstition". They believed in the gods and various spirits, and while we would call many of their beliefs "superstition" from a modern standpoint, it WAS their religion. From their standpoint, our "superstition" was their "relgion".
  22. That's part of the reason why I'm not currently going to college. I'm sick of sitting around in school all of the time, and I don't know what I want to do with my life, so I'm not going to pay thousands of dollars for an education in a field that I will later find I have no interest in, and basically throw all that $$ away while still not having the education I desire. I never thought of it that way! Of course, I wasn't born until 1988 so I really didn't experience that or even know of it.
  23. Yea, that's the sort of thing I'm looking for. Thanks Ursus! Does anyone know the latin? and LOL yea, that could be a curse. A cleverly worded, insidious curse!
  24. I agree. I loved learning, and still do. I'm tired of the school system, but there were some parts of it I really enjoyed. Not the system itself, which I despise, but some of the classes I had and such, I really enjoyed. I never really tried hard at school, never studied much, never actually did my homework at home, and always did well. The way I saw it, the gods gifted me with the ability to get through that drivel easily so that I'd have time to do the more important things. I hate to see people who believe that school is all there is. Parents do not help with this. My parents always encouraged me to do other things. Some people, I notice, force their children to do school clubs, sports, music, everything crammed into one day. It's no wonder the kids are exhausted!
