  1. I think they should make a movie about Cicero's valiant defense of the Republic and democracy over the Empire he knew was to come, the end of it could be caesar taking position as dictator, with his parade into Rome.

That would be exciting, be a good movie in terms of complexity, not be romanticized (little opertunity with Cicero's firm Republican values) and action, there would have to be a scene with the seige at brundisium, the faithful old senators sailing out of italy as the city is sacked ashore.

  2. To sum up what I get from your ideas:

    The hierarchy

    Admin/Mod

    Patrician

    Equestrian

    Plebian

If we have temporary titles as a reward for something special or great, the receiver of the title would still have the same capabilities and status as their official hierarchy status (Patrician, Plebian, Equestrian) but a temporary title instead of it just saying the military rank, or it could go in the place of their class status.

I'm unsure as to how to get the Tribunes working, but depending on how we do those it could be a fun thing. If we could get Ideas on that I'd be delighted, perhaps more details from the people desiring to be them?

I like the idea of changes the consilium comitia to the plebian assembly but I don't particularly want to segragate the classes. Anyways, at least were getting some where from the drawing board.

Ideas? (as stated by the others, No Nova Roma.)

  3. I would live under Augustus.

I would just have to remember to keep my hands off his daughter.

Ha ha ha, Agustus's daughter? My you've got to be daring to go there. Personaly I'd like one very loyal (not to mention beautiful and in love with me) slave girl who folowed me everywhere(as stated) and all my other slaves wouldn't be oh so special to me, I might keep a few pretty ones around for the guests pleasure (and to make me look rich) Otherwise I'd keep to strictly Republican Virtues.

Sorry to Digress thought. I was thinking that perhaps a nice villa life somewhere in naples or some lovely, almost cliffy, seaside position in Sicily under Agustan Reign of course, right durring the Pax Romana Prospering off those born every minute :P

  4. Perhaps one wouldn't have to live under an Empoer to be a senator?

Just a thought. It seems the pretty serving girl seems to be catching on. Personaly I'd like to get one to follow me around were ever I went. Perhaps the equivilent to how steven saylor portrays Tiro (Cicero's right hand slave) or on the same matter of steven saylors books, some one along the lines of bethesda.

  5. Get Your self a name change Trajan, I'll still call you Trajan thought. Now if I could get one "formorly known as father-killer...(sextus Rocius commited patricide)

Anyways. I had always viewed it from that one point that Nero was a decent musician. I'll look into it more now, thanks Trajan.

  6. ******

In regards to the other items ...

How about this. We leave the current admin structure intact, though if PP wants to change the membership criteria for Patricians and book give-a-ways that's fine with me.

Now we could have a separate board for Plebians and Equestrians to express their concerns. If they want to elect amongst themselves temporary "Tribunes" for the purposes of leading discussions and suggesting improvements, that's fine with me.

You can even change the current "Consilium Comitia" forum to a Plebian Assembly forum, as the patricians and mods have their own forums where they discuss things anyway. Some people like Onasander and Flavius have already expressed interest in being elected Tribune. Again, if this is a temporay and informal title for the purposes of leading the site majority in discussions and improvements, then so be it. People can hold a title for a few months as long as they have done something to actually earn it.

But let's not call them Consuls. Let's leave the current administration structure in place minus any change around the margins that PP wants to make. And for the love of the gods don't do anything that makes us look like Nova Roma.

So would that be a reasonable compromise?

I like this Idea, I think patrician criteria should be changed as P.P. had mentioned in a earlier post. I think this is the right amount of stuff to take from all the extreme ideas I through out the other night. Perhaps we can see what other members think about this?

  7. A new hierarchy might be (just brain storming)

    1.Admin

    2.Mods

    3.Patricians/senators/holders of honor offices

4.Low ranking officials/ holders of honor offices. (This class would come inbetween for the purposes making a more complex hierarchy and dividing things up. They would be given a superior status in terms of reward for contributions or the position temporaroly from a honor office)

    5.Equestrians/holders of honor offices

    6.Pleblians

    7.Slaves

The holders of honor offices could be selected by the senate and/or admins and would hold that position. The position of different offices would be equivilent to a permant status of the same level. However that would be a honorary position so while it would hold the equivilent to a status, it wouldn't get certain benefits of the status.

I did this as a general sketch of my ideas so they can be open to ctique and revision by others as I realize this is very sketchy and is in great need of refining.

P.S. I seem to be on a posting streak today this being my 21 post...

Does anyone have anything to contribute, becuase I see countless people starring at this thread for hours and then don't post anything, so, Ideas?

  8. My avatar is an original painting by historical artist Chris Collingwood. His work is expensive but fabulous...

Woah, as lost warrior said, I thought that was a PHOTO, what a great painter. Once I become rich (if I ever manage to) I will definatly decorate my halls with murals and mosiacs to that quality.

  9. Senatorial membership shouldn't necessarily have to incude free stuff I don't think, though some of the others may disagree. I think the benefit comes from having to come up with a thesis, then back it up with pros etc...Like a term paper. I for one would welcome the challenge as it would encourage research and broaden the perspective of the consuls and those that chose to respond.

Certainly Noble, but there are many perfectly good scholars with great ideas who quite frankly aren't good at writing long papers. I don't think it should be like appling for a job, people should be rewarded for overall good contributions, not a paper. It is impossible to take all of ones ideas and abilities and view them throught a paper.

However I do agree that people wouldn't need free stuff. Part of the benefit is the honor being selected and knowning that you have contributed and help the people of these hallowed webpages.

  10. I do like the idea of using titles to give members an incentive to contribute. We've proven that by doing it already with the various forum titles and membership groups. So keep talking about various ideas until we come up with something that is agreeable by all.

One thing to note though. I've never wanted UNRV to mimic a recreated Roman society. As long as the titles are in good fun and rewards for contributions to the overall site/community, I'm all for it, but I've never wanted to be Nova Roma. This place is for discussion of ancient Rome, regardless of whether or not anyone wants to 're-enact' Roman society. So just keep that in mind as we throw ideas of the wall.

Then perhaps the members "senate" could give out honorary titles to people they beleive have made contributions. Those would be temorary. So a person gets a reward in some way with that title and has it for a month or so then the senate selects a new one. A good way to reward some one for a series of particularly idea sparking posts etc. Keep away fromt he Roman re-enactment idea.

As for those taken to the members "senate" could be chosen by the admin or it could just simply be a particular class group. The unfortunate problem with that is that the patricians are very small and it wouldn't be as interesting, and the equestrians and patricians (or the equestrians themselves) are too large a group. I'll work on some ideas further, but I think this is a step towards a selection out of some of the more extreme ideas I put out in previous posts.

After posting I've seen that is seems Clodius has brainstormed some already

May I suggest a reorganization of heirarchy. Seems that Ursus and Germanicus should be Censors, the admins triumvirs, and the rest of us (those say with 100 posts for example) be made senators. We elect consuls as previously stated but they don't do just book reviews, the subject matter could be anything related to our passion (and no, I'm not talking *or* ;-0). The elected have a month to prepare their indepth thesis then post it for their peers to critique. And I don't mean 1 sentence answers but carefully prepared rebuttles. Thoughts!!!

Your idea is a solution to my delema, but I think doing it off amount of posts would be rediculous. It would make anyone who cared to post alot ,without putting much content into it, and filtering all those posts for value would simply take forever. Perhaps the original senate would be selected by our Admin and then the senate (along with the admin) could begin to select its own members who were considered to be quality contributers. Thoughts?

  11. Certainly not Ursus, but I think it would keep the group of people who's ideas are certainly considered priority from getting stale. Our Admin is incredibly inteligent and I think this would allow a much easier way of seeing wether or not the populus agrees with their ideas. I'm just musing here, and I suppose I've gotten off on a bit of a tangent. All I'm saying is that Admin, while smart and wise, still may not think the most people on a subject, and that would be another way for people to be upgraded. Also, the Admin ultimatly would have control over who was and was not in the Senate so to speak.

Sorry to have gotten a bit to far on the subject but I'm just putting ideas on the table and it could be decided how extreme to go or not to go at all. But while were speaking hypotheticaly I see no need to hold back ideas that come to my head on the matter.

  12. Constantinople could've been saved, but it would've taken a large combined effort of many nations and a good religious cause. If the catholics seriously considered saving the city then it could've been done. But no matter what happened the Turks were going to take it eventually no matter how many troops were poured into the defense. Eventually the western armies would get battle weary and give up.

  13. The Celts might argue that one has to write down everything to be considered a civilization.

Indeed. But perhaps we should stick to the point. I must agree with pyro, literature is highly important becuase it tells us about the past. Think about how much harder it would be to elarn about some one if they didn't right it down. We could know wat the different things were for, but peicing the puzzle together would be an enigma.

  14. A valid point, but so few are patricians. While I think that your system is well justified, I think we could benefit from a broader range of ideas.

It would mix the newer players with the older players. That way we can know what the site looks like to the different groups rather than a particular one. I think that way the people could have their say effectively without any more spartacus revolts. It would keep from the Idea of the government with infinite wisedom. While I have full confidence in the mods and Triumvirate, I think democracy is great, and websites shouldn't have exceptions.

  15. Ok, so here it is. A rather interesting one (by my standards)

Three men go to a Hotel, they are sharing a large room for $30 total. To even the prices, they each pitch in $10. So they go to their room. Once they are in their room, the manager realizes he charged them too much. The room really only cost $25 and so he went to the men

  16. A very interesting prospect Clodius. Perhaps the senate could be made up of patrician and equestrian volunteers. We could have elections. What a lovely prospect. That way people could use the senate to vote on changes rather than the tres imperators deciding everything. But once again, just a tought.

As my avatar suggests, I am in full support of this movement.

  17. No sorry, I said they came from eastern europe. When I pointed out that indo means india, I didn't mean that Aryans came from indo, but that they were related as one group. The hypen to me represent the connection rather than the Indo which has never been applied to anything not refering to India in my knowledge and so I assume (and am agreed with from many sources world-wide) that Indo means india.

Thats the thing, if we english speaking folks stoped taking so many short cuts we wouldn't have these problems.

  18. They didn't have music

Not in are sense, but the surely did. It is impossible for a civilized culture to exist without music. They had fewer intsraments, sure, but they doesn't mean they didn't have music. It just wasn't written down

    E.G.

    Double Flute

    Lyre

    Drum

    Horn

    Bells

The difference is that most music was to acompany an epic or story or play. But there was however music to not acompany things.

Anyways, sorry to get off on that, I need to know how to say

"where is she?" "off in the sun rise."
