  1. Patrician

You scored 77% on Social Skills!

You are one of the ruling elite. Thought your family may not be rich in money, you are rich in power and through that power you can replinish your coffers at will. Caesar doesn't trust you, nor should he. You don't trust Caesar or the Plebians (citizens), as you know just how fickle the two can be. Thus you spend lavish sums to put on games, festivals and theater performances for the masses, in an attempt to show up Caesar. You play a dangerous game with the crocodile, in the hopes that he will eat you last...

YAY ME, I always knew a life of luxury was meant for me...

  2. If you are talking about music to listen to when studing, I advise Motzart, its been proven to make people think better (but not my spelling unforuntely) But, the people gave lists before if you just wanna dance to it and I agree with them that from your choice those would be good. Personaly I perfer classical, jazz, rag, and some rock.

  3. perhaps they made a strange adaptation on the testuedo formation with round sheilds, I'm sure you could carry bodies on that,

or maybe they refer to a man coming in the door holding his shield, but becuase he is dead, he falls over and topples on it... just a thought.

Oh well, its fun to take things litteraly for once.

  4. I'm the youngest here then, I'm not even in high school, 8th grade is so lovely, and our high school has latin and the middle school does too. Unforuntely I am in a class of about...13 students.

So lovely me, I don't have to work at all, ever, minus homework that is but that isn't really the same thing is it? Oh well, I feel bad for you... :P

  5. Imperial culture is the fusion of Roman culture with whatever the local culture was. Most educated Romans looked to Greece; most educated Romanophiles in the modern era look to Greece. That's fine. Greece has its fine points. Personally, though, I'll take the halls of food and gold over Platonic and Stoic philosophy. :) Cheers.

Personaly, I couldn't think of any thing more fun than sitting around all day reading and writing and discussing about the world, the ideas in it, and how it works. Drinking and feasts constantly just don't hold quite the same attraction to me, I'd get a stomach ache. Personaly I would want to be more laid back, and the role of philosipher fits my hobbies perfectly. Though I can see becoming a politician too...nahhh

  6. My topic seems to have grown since I last stoped in.

This is most likely a over exageration, but I beleive that one of the worst punishments would have been one of Nero's concerts. He forced people to stay, if they left then the guards would kill them. It is rumoured that some people actually faked Dieing so that they could be released from the concert.

Pretty lousy musician anyways, But not all who own a musical instrument are musicians.

    :)

P.S. Can't resist to use a quote when i can

  7. As Germanicus said, Publius Clodius (Cluadius Originaly) changed his name to change his status from patrician to pleblian. This was done so he could run for a specific office (once again I draw a blank on this) that was only avadiable to Pleblians. This also increased his poularity with the lower class since the records of him say he was some what of a Rabble Rouser.

So yes it did happen, but I doubt very often.

  8. I like it alot better, and as a plebian, I can become a (what ever that office was. tribune I think?) instead of just being a plain old member. But I guess underneath the vanity, Its still the same lol.

Oh yes, I see Viggen has taken advantage of the recent change and made him self "Imperator" All Hail! (or else I suppose but anyways) All hail!

But what ever, I'm still having fun! :sniper: B)

  9. actually my continued reading of "at the Roman Table " leads me to suggest that the worst punishment might be a grand dinner including a main course of "barren pigs womb". B)

I now turn my thoughts of patricide as worse punishment, to this repugnant "feast?" if it can be called so. I must agree. "barren pig's womb" yuck! B)

  10. I retract my previous statement about the Greek aristocrat. My enthusiasm for Greece is not what it once was. Now I'd like to be ... a Celtic chieftan allied with Rome. Yes, when not kowtowing to my Roman overlords, I would live a life of feasting and wealth and Romano-Celtic temples. Sounds like a nice life.

Interesting Ursus, personaly I wouldn't like to live as a Celtic Cheiftan. Not hygenic enough for me, and I like to live a life of gilded grandure (not to mention marble walls and mosiac floors) rather than large halls full of food and drink.

  11. As for the idea that America may fall due to social and sexual permissiveness, I'm more worried about going the other way. That too many Censors want to turn us into somethg more like Oliver Cromwell's Puritan Theocracy. That is a greater danger than what people do behind closed doors. ANd as for Englishmen liking to party...did you ever try and get home on the London Tube late on Guy Fawkes Day? Oy!All thats missing is the wolf teeth and woad!

I'm sorry to say, but you must be living in a ulturnate reality to be able to say "what people do behind closed doors" It is no longer such in America, sexuality is massivly common place. I fear that our society will collapse because of it. We are breeding races of ignorant, arrogant, microteens... I'm not joking. My 6 year old sister goes around acting like she is 14, singing and listening to rap, and not to mention has already cursed. And it isn't just my sister, you can see it all the time. Its a horrible debasement to the United States.

This is why radical Muslims hate us (some, but all mind you) becuase of the "obvious evils" of American soceity. Number one on the list is the amount of sexuality present, constantly.

Roman culture was somewhat related to the United States in this sense but they didn't go around advertising themselves in the most revealing, yet legal, clothing possible. In America, many of our younger citizens (modern day teenagers in particualar) have chosen to use the quit part of ettiquit and is a large disgrace. Roman culture was much more moderated by social standards and If you were to go around as what some of the America citizens look like...then you would be shunned and most likely beat up or something.

But the Idea of our world now becoming a puritan Theocracy is interesting, but aren't all the western countries governed by christians anyways. Personaly I think some of America's Political leaders make to many descisions based of religion, though most aren't likely to admit it. But as far as the world become a Oliver Cromwell style world....hard to see.

  12. I agree in part with both of you.

While america's plitical system clearly is based off the Roman Republic, the actually history of America is more representative of that of Carthage. But if we truely follow the same path as the carthaginians then when will the moderen "Rome" so to speak destroy us.

However our complexity of life is completely different to any of these powers and so I think it is impossible for The U.S. to really be completely related to them in terms of culture, though Rome's culture resembles ours very well in the sense of how people go about the daily lives and the government input, we follow a different moral code which has major impact.

Though we may yet, as Rome did, see a dictator rise rather than be defeated by Rome's might. Which will happen? We may, just like the licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop, never know...

  13. I think it seems a bit 'embellished' but consider Josephus motivations... Titus, one of Josephus' benefactors did it with 4 legions. By reporting the previous siege needed 11 legions (and then some) it increases the glory of Titus' accomplishment.

While we may not be able to prove whether or not my suggestion has any merit, its still this sort of thing that makes reading the ancients such a chore sometimes. While the overall general history did come to pass, we just can never be quite sure of all the details.

As P.P. said it could be to increase the glory of Titus' achievement. Also, keep in mind that these legions where most likely not a full strength and some of the soldiers could've been quick recruits, armed with nothing more than a spear and a helmet.... So we don't mean 66,000 full equiped men, in perfect health, with all the nessacary supplies. Maybe the actually figures were more along the 40 or 50 thousand man line including calvary.

  14. Mullet....doesn't sound pretty. You've really taken it into consideration eh sullafelix?

BTW FLavius Valerius Constantinus, the instrument used for decimation was that the soilders who were chosen (one out of every ten randomly) were stoned to death while tied to a pole by the other soldiers who were not chosen.....

Just to answer your question. :)

  15. I always thought that one of Nero's favourite punishments was quite nasty. The offender's penis would be wound with wire, and he would then have to drink water until he died (presumably from a burst bladder).

That one is definatly bad.... patricide is still the worst in my book but that one comes pretty close.... :D ummm....I didn't doo nothing... :)

  16. Got to agree with you on that one, ouch that has gotta hurt. But I'd still rather have that happen than the paracide punishment. Why didn't they just get things over with a slice their head off like the rench revolutionaries and Marie Antoniette. Sheesh, why did they have to be so fancy about it anyways lol...
