  1. Well you probably have just never relised it. Pagans keep to themselves due to persuctions by Convervative Christians. I personally have never met face to face another Roman Pagan ;)

I am very open with my spirtuality and when I tell other people I am a Roman Pagan they say its a phase I am going through and that the light of god will see me again. They say I just want to rebel and be uquine. Why would I rebel if I KNOW that there are not many Roman Pagans in the world,If I wanted to rebel and be uquine I would dye my hair purple and think I was cool lol. I have seen weird stuff though in dreams and in the night sky. Soon I will have a whole dedicated to my gods. But thats just me I have so many friends that arn't Pagans so yeah.

But pompeius magnus you probably have run into several Wicca fallowers but never know it. I know 4 or 5 at my high school.

Lets get back the orginal subject though of why people are intrested in Rome.

I think its because it was one of the greatest Empire of all time and without Roman culture and ideas, well we might be living under kings.

    Sorry about spelling,

  2. Zeke a quick question. No offense intedended but I was curious how you became a pagan. were you born one or did you just decide later on that it was the best religion for you.

oh yes....I posted a Post called Roman Paganism on the forums it explains what I believe and why I became a Roman Pagan. But yes I converted myself to Roman Paganism when my dad died. About 2 years ago. Very few people in the world today are born in to Paganism except in India, most discover their spirtuality themselves.

  3. I also have several shrines in my home and a whole room deidcated to praying and sacrficing. To add to that Sacrficing is just taking the energy of a gift......Wine, Flowers, objects etc. and giving it to the Gods. How is that done through a complex ritual of praying and singing and showing reverance. The energy of the object that would normally take a long time to manifest itself into something of spiritual nature is directly sent to the Gods.

  4. Well Paganism and its impact on the Roman Empire keeps comming up in other debates so I think I will start a debate about Paganism so we can get it off our chests :)

THIS IS ALL MY OPINION SO NO ONE TAKE IT OFFENSIVE

To start I am a Roman Pagan and I am fully confident of that I started to be one when my dad died two years ago. I asked myself what type of Religion do I want to be what do I belief in....does spirtuial power even exist?? I looked at the history books, certain mythologies and stuff and I came to the conclusion that, Chriasianity isn't for me because I don't like the "Authroian" nature of it. Wicca isn't for me because well I don't believe in their magic stuff and their tarrot and the whole dark rebelliong against soceity thing. So I looked at the ancient roots of old religions. And I relised that they was some spirtual power ready to be awakened in the long forgotten Pagan Religions of the Old Roman Empire.

So within about 3 months I had totally converted to the Roman/Greeco Pagan Religions of old. Let me just give you a basic outline of what I believe and why I am a Roman Pagan.

What I believe of how religion works

    1. I believe in alot of science lets just esabalish that things are governed by science and the number of atoms in an element which makes compounds and things and all the rest, graviy, why things happen etc.

    2. That yes, Humans evolved from Apes, spirtual things didn't create humans

    3. Humans created religion, but it was human energy, (all things have a bubble of energy around them) that created the existance of supernatural things that cannot be explained. Example: Human energy never dies it stays on this earth so with commbinations of human energy certain spirts formed, and Gods, Goddesss and their beings came after. Souls are not energy, there just the essense of life that is IN LIVING things not stones and rivers. But Plants, animals, fugi and humans.

    4. There are three worlds: This world, the spirtual world/afterlife and the past.

This world is what we humans live in composed of the Earth and our universe. Spirts live in our world as do energy admited by all things.

The Spirtual World/after life is like the happiest places on earth. It really depends on what Religion your belong to and whats kinds of Good places and bad places their are in your religion. Humans can go here only in deep spirtual trances in my opinion.

The past is what has happened from the beging of Earth since energy has always inhabbited all things. Though it was Human's energy that first created the conecpt of Religion and Gods and Goddeses. Anything that happened in the past from 5 seconds ago to 5 years ago to 500 years ago effects humans to this day.

    5. I believe that human personality energies molded together a number of diffrent gods and goddeses from diffrent regions in a commbination of spirtual energy, explaining why each region of the world always had religion and certain diffrent gods and such. So you must repspect the spirtual things of what region you are going into unless your are opposed to it.

    6. In the example of Chrianisty, Christanity almost took over the world and is in nearly every country today, I think the resons of this is because so many energies of Christian believers went into the one Hebrew God that he gained more power in the world. When people stop believing energy is taken away sorta of like messing with the atoms of elements. Your just messing with energy. And if you are not a Christian and your a Pagan your energy goes to whatever you believed in. If your an Atehiest it just ceases to be.

NOW that I have explained energy I will explain what I believe, what I worship and the future in my eyes of Roman Paganism.

After all my ranting what exacly do I believe???

    1. I believe in 12 main Gods and several minors ones from Greek and Roman Classical Religion-Dii Indigites, the deities native to Rome at its founding. I also belief in several forgien Gods that were incoporated into the Roman system to please. Dii Novensiles, foreign deities who were either fully assimilated into the pantheon or otherwise associated with Roman religion.

    2. Spirits that inhabbitat certain trees and rivers.

    3. Reverance toward Mother Earth (Gaia) and her creation.

    4. Ansestors.

    5. Several Holidays of the Roman Religion which I have to incoportate into my religion.

In the future hopfully Roman Paganism will refound in my view the only way this will happen is if the few believers in Roman Gods come together and pool resources to build temples and places of worship they offer public services to the comman people and show that Roman Paganism can be trusted in the eyes of the world, help people and hopfully a reformed preisthood.

    That is what I believe.

What do you belief and how do you back up WHY you belief.......................................

    Thanks,

    sorry about spelling

    Zeke

  5. Well the problem is, the Romans in the early early days believed in animism and spirits and the like but then later on when they start to conquer you notice they adopt new gods which kinda makes me lose interest. I don't really like people who can just switch religous views so easily. I tend to respect people more who keep with ther religion even if times get rough.

Yeah I agree with you in several ways but....here is my view. I think it is perfeclty ok to adopt new gods into your Pantheon if you a Pagan. The thing I don't like is these new ages Wicca views where they incorperate Gods and Goddeses from the Roman and Greek Pantheonons and mix with a whole bunch of magic and stupid stuff. They also put in Christian Montheism which doesn't match. I think Roman Reconstruct Paganism should be kept at a basic level without all the magic that Witches incorperate or these new age Hippies.

I also like people who don't change their views on religion even if it gets really tough. Thought I would prefear Christians going back to their anceint Roots.

To add to this.......I worship Roman Gods yes but I also worship some Celtic and Nordic deities because the Romans incoporated them into their system. The history of Rome clearly says that they still have reverance for their old gods but also respect the new ones.

  6. Did anyone ever read The Skystone? By Jack Whyte its a great legened to King Authur and a good account of Roman Britian before it fell to Barbarians.

Also know any other good Roman Historical Fiction Books??

EAGLE IN THE SNOW IS ON THE TOP OF MY LIST.

    Sorry about spelling

  7. Do you think something relitavly close to the Roman Empire could be formed in a country.

Example:Lets say a country like Luxmberg or the Netherlands wanted to become Roman, like really Roman, Roman looking towns, Latin Laungage, Roman Religion, Roman Culture and the like. Rome Republiscim also. Do you think that a new Rome could be ahcieved if enough people wanted it to happen. Except the new Rome would have modern day technolgy in the buildings and medicene and the like.

So do you think it could happen a nation could go Romaniazed and become just like the Empire of the past.

    Explain your answear :)

  8. A Democratic-Socalisit government with high living, collectivized farming, high taxes, all run on Hydro, solar, wind, peat, coal, eutheral and Vegatble energy.Everyone has a job, a place to live, and enough things to keep them entertainted. No president but two Consuls elected each year, the capital of the world would be most likly in Geneva. Countries would be like states

    Zeke

  9. You got to look at it this way in those days everything wasn't as expensive as it is now heck you could trade a donky for a fish! lol. The Romans had more man power though and all Italian. Carthage had mixes very few Carthgians were employed except for Sea Men and Carthgian Generals to command mixes of Nubians, Celts, Belrics, Spairnds etc.

  10. Viggen may I make a suggestion that we add some sort of Relgious Forum cause were always starting up a debate on Religion. pompeius magnus I totatally support you being a Muslim and all and Viggen you being a Catholic. I would think that you would be affraid to be a Muslim in the war were having. I really don't support it because its your Religion and we shouldn't try to force it "WE" meaning the Americans and its Allies. We got rid of a harsh dictator but now....well I have a feeling that we are causing problems for the Muslim Religion which is the second most largest religion in the world.

    Sorry about spelling

    Zeke

  11. Yep exacly right pompeius magnus, I just asked not be converted too and the reasons why I don't wish to be converted I never said anymore now did we? And did you know that nowadays the Catholic church is cooler then it once was.....you got be proud of some of it accomplishments the Roman Religion was never that cenetercalized if Catholcism could take over my religion well you give it some credit. :)

But anyway nice long post......good points their to, but I see it diffrently. The Hebrew God was just another Polythestic God in a Pagan world, people started to fallow him because of his mystical son Jesus and that he offered more consultment then Mitharas, or Isis, or Jupiter for example. He just took over using a dictatorship of power and now he is building his Kingdom on earth. BUT in many ways I am Atheist I like scince and I also think it makes alot of sence. For example man created Religion to explain things everyone knows that we evolved from Apes its a known fact. But when humans started to belief in something truly belief then the Poylthestic Gods arose from the earth I don't know how really it just happend. Other then that Humans are made out of Atoms as is everything else along with compounds, liquids, solids, gas all that stuff. The only diffrence between us and the Gods are the Gods are Immortal and you can't see them (unless in a Vision) I love nature and the Gods are derived from Nature I don't know about the christain God cause in his sacred Text....he made the world and everything in it :(. I admit that most of my religion documents and myths are just stories and Myths but there are also alot of stories and Myths in the bible. All and all well I have nothing else to say really I just wanted to give you a fast fact.

I don't really care if your a Catholic or a Protesent. If you a Catholic you fallow the pope have more rituals and more elaborat churchs with a whole bunch of gold. If your a Protesent your a Fantical Christian with a simple wooded church that doesn't send out saints to heal people but does like to convert people. The two are both Christians its was kinda of stupid to have a bloody war over it. If you are one of the two I resepct your Religion I am not going to go out murdering you or starting a Crusade like your average Christain would do. Come to think of it if you God was more liberal and allowed Female Deities to help it out or talked about Nature a little more then I might incoporate it in to my Pantheon. But it deosn't so I can't. And Lovedone sorry if I was a little harsh on your earlier about Religion, pompeius magnus is right in someways. So anyway I am going to go read Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, great book.

    sorry about spelling,

    Zeke

  12. I for one is an example of Roman Pagan, a small yet growing movment in Neo-Paganism. All I ask is that we have a healthy debate and that we talk about the Roman Empire in general......don't try to convert me and don't say that I worship false gods cause in my view Christainity was just a cult that has destroyed countless civilizations and brought the end of some of the greatest empires in histroy, your god is nothing to me just another God that people were converted to. But anyway.....Welcome to

UNRV History I am sure you will enjoy your stay here.....though there are not many of us and you will find the main posters are primuspilus, Ursus, Moonshade (I think thats his name) myself and some other indivduials. We need to somehow attract people to Roman History.....I mean it can't be that boring I quite enjoy it.

    Cheers,

    Zeke ;)

  13. hmmmm my favorite Roman Qoute would have to be,

"We who are about to die salute you!"

The epic cry of the Glatiators. I have many great quotes that I like though from the Enemys of Rome.

My favorite being when Hannibal is about to get captured by Romans, he smiles and says,

"Let us now end a life that cause the Romans so much anxiety!" He then takes poison.

When the Gauls sack Rome in 390 B.C. Brennus says,

    Vae Vitcs-"Woe to the counqured"

    Yep all good quotes.

  14. I got a colorful line to this kinda of debate. Ok were trying to see if Hannibal was better then Alexander or vice versus buts lets just say that they were both alive around the peirod, Alexander would be well known of coarse, so in my opinion Hannibal would chicken out. Because Alexander the Great according to the history books and guiness book of world recrods never lost a battle.

So here is my colorful line

When Hannibal was on the run in the east, Scipio Africanus the only man who had managed to defeat Hannible ask him who were the best Generals in the world?

"Alexander the Great," Replied Hannibal, "because with a small force he defeated armies whose numbers were beyond reckoning, and because he overran the remotest regions, merely to visit which was a thing above human aspirations,"

"To whom would you give second place?" asked Scipio.

Hannibal reflected for a moment and then said: "Phyyhus, for he first taught the method of encamping, and besides no one ever showed such exquisite jidgement in choosing his ground and disposing his posts.

(Scipio was becoming quite annyoned now, his ego was probably becomming a little netted asked Hannibal who he would give third to,

"Myself beyond dout," replied Hannibal Barca.

    Scipio laughed and then asked,

"What would you have said you if had counqured me?"

    "Then," came Hannibal's reply,

"I WOULD HAVE PLACED NOT ONLY BEFORE ALEXANDER AND PHYRUUS BUT BEFORE ALL BEFORE ALL OTHER COMMANDERS.

  15. What exaclly are you saying. I know the Eastern Empire was Orthadox Christian and that all Pagan Temples were burnt to the ground. But I am saying the real Roman Empire when it was great and hadn't been converted to Christianity ended sometime around Aurelian the reson it fell was because Thedoeius ordered the Altar of Victory removed from Rome and the Temple Fires in Temple of Vesta extingused not to get to Religious but I am a Hellnic Pagan and I truly believe that Rome fell because it was taken over by a Mystery cult from the East. If Jesus had never been crucidfide or if I never existed we all still be Pagan perhaps .
