Princeps Posted November 8, 2005 Report Share Posted November 8, 2005 I have no life outside the internet, I'm actually just a piece of spamming software which periodically responds to random threads with pre-programmed commentaries... Actually I'm a 19 year old advertising student in New Zealand whose just begun summer break. I go to the gymn four times a week, and asides from a keen interest in military history and Roman civilisation I also enjoy cooking, writing, reading, snow skiing, designer clothing and socializing. I hate and embrace the genocide of the following things: Hippies, Goths (the contemporary type), Punks, Druggies, Political correctness and idiots. How narrow minded! I hate designer clothing. I do like painting and reading though, and I used to go gyming (now I swim). I am a student of architecture. I'm a student at the moment, but on weekends and throughout the school holidays, i do casual labour around the shire i live in, like grading watermelons, harvesting cherries and oranges and shearing/rouse-abouting. I also work on my own farm to help my dad out, and i'm the youngest member of my area's local Volunteer Bushfire Brigade And president of the Doctor Who fan club. Does it require lots of traveling. Oh, yes. A lot of travelings and very interesting and very hard job and have nothing to do with Indiana Johns. Hopefully next september i'll be enrolled upon an archaeology degree and i can only hope that it'll lead onto a career in archaeology. Laboratory work preferred. Where are you going to study? Sheffield University (in England). Yeah there's not much money in archaeology, certainly not in field archaeology as the job is not what you'd call regular (it's more seasonal). However, in museums and university departments there's is always demand for people conserving artefacts. The other route to go down is to take archaeology and teach it. I already have a degree in medieval history though so i can always default to teaching history at an advanced level in colleges. The archaeology degree is a masters degree... if it goes well and i enjoy it, then who knows perhaps i could do a PhD. The drive is of course to get published and be supported by the university/college one works for. Your ideas and theories, if compelling enough will fuel more grant money and get you positions at higher paying (+ more prestigous) universities. Hopefully someday I will switch gears with those goals in mind: Teaching+Writing However, right now I have a great job but I honestly can't divulge any detail on what that is other than to say I work in Civil Service. It's getting to that time where I must start to think about what to do after university. It will involve history in some way or another. I'm currently working voluntarily at the Melbourne Museum, yet still unsure if I want to pursue public or academic history in the future. I am a technical writer and editor by trade. I have to spend a great deal of time in front of a computer and on the internet. The good news is, yes, I get to write for a living. The bad news is, no, it isn't anything you'd really want to read. Mostly, I translate the engineers' and programmers' technospeak into complete, natural language sentences. What else... I've developed/edited website content and proofed/edited technical-scholarly publications. I've also worked as a carpenter, chef, and clerk. But, I really always wanted to be Indiana Jones! DanM Posted December 3, 2005 Report Share Posted December 3, 2005 (edited) My education was in accounting and most of my work experience was in back office stuff related to the issuance of bonds by mortgage companies. The process is called securitization and it does a lot to lower the interest rates on loans and to increase the scope of which loan products can be offered to the public. Now I am a partner in a business that lies within the field of healthcare. My area of responsibility within the business is accounting/finance. I guess that's really not much of a stretch. lol If my writing style did not resemble a business memo, I would try to write historically-based fiction. Since I don't have the writing chops to pull it off, however, I just think of history as my hobby and my personal indulgence. ....and I am probably one of the older guys here at the age of 35.
