I set off today to meet Northern Neil and check the location of a possible Flavian Fortlet site , this is the fort site that he has mentioned previously and the link gives some information:

So a possible birthplace for St Patrick? Which makes him a Lancastrian !

So what was the site like?

Well, the best summary would be...submerged. There has been some initial dig work but this has been backfilled , I was there again yesterday and the site makes good sense in relation to the nearby Iron age fort. However I have little else to add at present.

Can the coins found near the excavation site give us a more accurate date that just 'Flavian'?

Heres another snippet, but the site ID is contentious in archeaological circles:

Wow, you are lucky, going around digging up roman stuff and getting all the cool re-enactment photos. I'm stuck in the united states, in the cheese state. Hardly the place to look for roman artifacts/re-enactments. That is a cool story right there.

Brits have always been lucky! They have a world of history in their backyards, they've been safe on their island through history, yet close enough to history to take part in it.

Just to prove FC's point, this virtually is our backyard!

Ok , google earth is not too good in the area-resolution is so so, but, your best way to navigate is to do as follows:

find Ulverston UK: -thence move South West to the location "birkrigg": which is where this shot is from :

Notice a lake to the West of the location? That is Urswick , or rather the Lake around which the village is situated.

I must admit google earth wouldn't even register to those locations but the pic you uploaded did the justice. Thanks!

OK , well try this :

1. seek out the UK 2. find Manchester, and from there move NW toward Lancaster.

3. From Lancaster move West across the estuary of the Lune and Leven (Morecambe Bay) toward Barrow ( a large town).

4.moving back eastward from Barrow you should pick up Ulverston as one of the few sizeable towns.

Failing that I will make a note to take some detailed shots of the locality and post them here.
