Casino Royale

If you've seen one Bond film you have seen them all.

Anyone who desires any realism, or even just intelligent 'suspension of disbelief' cannot sit through a Bond film without feeling annoyed. Why is he never put in awkward situations....

The original Ian Fleming novel "Casino Royale" certainly put James in an "awkward situation" - a very sadistic and painful one too.

The scene is so central to the novel that it was always regarded as unfilmable - hence the spoof from the 60s with Niven, Woody Allen, Sellars etc. (In one shot a carpet-beater is glimpsed as a symbolic reminder to readers of the novel - if you don't get the reference you don't need to know!)

As the first novel, Broccoli and Salzman did not have the film rights, so it was an opportunity for another film-maker to do something different.

Personally, I wish they would do a TV series (of Morse standard production values and casting), faithful to the novels and set in the right period. I think it might work well - though it would be pretty adult viewing, but no worse than ROME for nudity or sex i would have thought.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just saw the film yesterday. I LOVED It.

I've not enjoyed the Bond movies in ages (even though I liked the casting choice of Pierce as Bond) but this was definitely a reboot...

Best Bond movie in ages and Daniel Craig is the best Bond since Sean Connery. No campiness, no extremely unrealistic stuff.

If you have ever at one time liked Bond but lost faith and quit enjoying the movies, go see Casino-Royale. Even if it's just to see Eva Green in her cocktail dresses....

(And Phil, the torture scene is in there... )

I've been a Bond fan as long as I've been watching movies, but even I thought the franchise was getting stale--until Casino Royale. It's definitely the best Bond film in a long, long time. It even has a wonderful series of scenes at picturesque Lake Como (isn't Ginevra from there?).

Yayayayayaya now I must go see it. I hated the last guy who played bond in the one set in North Korea, in fact I hated it so much I don't remember the title. Looking foreward to this one!

I, too, was highly impressed. I enjoyed Pierce Brosnan as Bond, but the scripts just weren't there for me. But this script was pretty solid (ok, just let your mind go sometimes...it is a movie, afterall), and Daniel Craig has me almost drooling. His face isn't much to look at...but that body! He rocked the gym to get ready for the roll, you can tell that.

Doc,

I went with my girlfriend & my sister... Needless to say, they were beside themselves with glee

So, Pan, the Bond girls are still hot?

Indeed... :D

I attended the Kinematograph to view the item discussed, my findings were:

1.It is advisable to avoid purchasing property in Venice.

2.Nail guns can be dangerous.

3.Never drive avgas bowsers at high speed.

Back to basics is good, the lethal pugnacity of the books has been rekindled.

Excellent use of Miss Green's assets.

ps:please note use of a herb described by Dioscorides in the attempted assassination of Bond-Digitalis( cardiac glycoside).
