That's what happened here recently. During the 90s and early 2000s it was "everyone can afford a home! Adjustable rates make it easy!" and so it goes. And now more people are renting...and like you bring up, it's not such a bad thing. I, too, figured out early on that I really couldn't afford to buy a home, either. Yes, I do wish I had my own home...and I also wish to afford it.

Very true...but I personally never thought of myself as much of a photographer. I simply wanted to chronicle my journeys in life, knowing that at some point my wonderful and seemingly permanent memory will fail me catastrophically, at which point I'd like to be able to not just point out a holiday snap, but tell you where I was, what I was thinking, etc. I just would like people to be honest...maybe that's too much to ask?

Oooh...ok, similar gripe here, but from the opposite end.
I love putting pictures online...that way, I send the link, and if people want to see them, great. But if they can't be bothered, they can toss the email, and I'm none the wiser.
But lately, both with the trip to Hawaii last year and to Italy this year, I have people tell me, "Ooooh! You have to tell me about the trip! You have to show me the pictures!" And especially with the Italy ones--let's face it, I took 900 shots or so over 2 weeks--but even the Hawaii ones last year, people were completely tuned out by the 4th or 5th snap. They really didn't care.
Look, if you want to see the pictures, I'm happy to tell you the story behind them, what I was thinking about when I took the shot, etc. But don't placate me by feigning interest, only to realize that you don't care. I mean, if you know me at all, I will have lots of reasons for doing what I do, and lots of information behind my decisions...if you don't want to hear it, then just wait for the email link.

Heh yeah, Mr. Prescott seems to have turned out just fine, regardless of his actions.
Protests...there's plenty of them. The problem comes in that much of the time (at least in California) they're organized by the unions...a hugely powerful lobby in their own right. So the government often does indeed somewhat ignore the protests, or at least in that they don't often act immediately. They wait until they need to, which funnily enough tends to coincide with election season. Then they make promises, the unions decide to back or batter a given candidate, and John and Jane Q Public vote. Then the same thing happens again.
Take the governor's race right now. One major candidate is a former governor, who comes from a political family. Of course, he once famously called himself 'Moonbeam.' The other major candidate is a billionairess who ran a major corporation...but has never once publicly done anything in government. Many voters under 40 do not remember the former candidate's governorship, and therefore are relying on political ads and blasts from the latter candidate's campaign for info; I hear it on the street all the time. The thing is, we've had a billionaire of business (of sorts) who had at least a hint of political background with his in-laws, and he's shown the political leadership skills of a ninny. I doubt this billionairess will be much better. The unions are for the latter candidate, but if he does win, and if he governs like he did in the past, the unions won't necessarily get all the concessions that they think they will. So I'm sure there will be more protests.
Vicious cycle, eh?

D'oh...now I gotta wait 6-9 months to watch that episode...the weird part is that I received the tweets about the Top Gear special, it didn't do me a lick of good, since I must wait for BBC America to get around showing it here. *sigh*

Huh...amazing how things have changed over the years. I'm guessing that the education system there is much like it is here: what used to be a 'if you show talent, I'll push you, otherwise you're just a kid in a chair' mentality has for about 15 years been changed to 'hey, you can do anything, so let's show you a wide range of possibilities, and I'll push you regardless.' If you had been in the recent system, who knows what could have happened.

Just out of curiosity, did anyone try to encourage you to study engineering, aeronautical or otherwise? Or was it thought of by others as full of dreams, not to be pursued? It seems as though you had the imagination to go into that realm, but were kept out for some reason.

Radio Amnesty...sounds like the tv amnesty that we had hear last year. Everyone now in the US needs to get their tv signals from either a wire coming from the wall, or a specific type of special antenna that pulls a digital signal out from somewhere. The funny part is, I thought most everyone here had either cable or satellite.
Then again, I was informed that most everyone has an HD tv...um, well, not this person...

LOVE sushi...and one of the perks of living in Japantown of a not-San Francisco city is that it's very good, and very affordable. The only downside is that, with my being allergic to shellfish, there's a bunch of varieties and rolls that I can't enjoy. On the other hand, toro...*drool*

Zurich...I'm only there a couple of hours to change planes, both going and coming. My bigger worry is that long haul from SF to there, and then back...what am I going to do? Actually, it's not a worry at all, and having done a trans-Atlantic trip once before, I have an idea of what will happen. I won't sleep much, which might be to my benefit, seeing as how I land in Rome at 7ish. Eh, a good book, probably my Italian refresher book (I have to remember this language that I haven't spoken in many years), maybe an iPod full of music, and I'll be fine. I promise to wave over Slough when we pass over your place, Mr. C!
