I just want to discuss the state of Rome relative to these Greek beliefs. To my understanding, many Romans fround upong Greek philosophy partly for its complex nature. However in these three philosophies: Epicureanism, Stoticism, and Cynicism one had to apply to Roman life.
Epicureanism-a pure materialistic view of things.
Stoticism-the search for an inner life with religion.
Cynicism-criticism of mankind and society.
Obviously the Greek subscribed to all these philosophies, given their mindset. However many Roman hate philosophy, but had to follow one of the three above. Bear with me here, where do the Romans stand on these three ideas?

Thank God I'm from Egypt.

I heard of Asterix in French class. The teacher said it was a story about a Viking who came to liberate Gaul from the Romans.

All the home teams advanced. Well, as long as the dirty birds don't make it I'm .

Could Phoenician ships handle the rought Atlantic waters? I don't think there was direct trade because Phoenicia was just so far away from England.

Ah, well, I'm dating an 18 year old girl. But a 15 year old boy would be not to my taste.
I'm assuming your talking to me so...no surprise, I would not have it any other way.
I hope your relationship goes well...so you would not be angry with this 15 year old boy.

I remember something called Pax Romana, that brought much needed peace to an empire that has gone over the top with killing.
Although the Western Empire could have fallen from Christianity as a miniscule reason, lets not forget the Eastern Empire's golden age came with Christianity.

Nah, those poems would ruin my image around here.
Besides ... what if they work and you all start swooning for me?
Yeah, as the saying goes some things are better left unsaid. And also if you check out my signature it reads, 'so it is written, so shall it be.'

Ramses, I don't think Latin derived from Ancient Greek to any serious degree.
Agreed, but you can't underestimate the factor of Greek language in European language groups.
-
Pantagathus, were not the first kings of Rome Etruscan? I know they were not Latin.
If the Etruscans -
Also the president of Lebanon is Christian. One of the few nations in the Middle East that does not have the name Arab in it.
-
Dude, I'm Lebanese and in my country there is an Iranian backed militia called Hizbullah. If I express my pro-Israeli views or question Islam publicly, I will be kidnapped, tortured and murdered. So quit with your Fox news stuff. I live in the real word, I was in a war and fired my first gun at 13 years of age. There is a reason why it's called the Islamic Republic of Iran, because Islamic law is upheld. Read Sharia law for more info on what happens to the non-believers. But even in Iran there is corruption and exceptions to the law.
Also not to mention Lebanon is a Christian country!
I am also from the Middle East and this DOES happen. So those who want to deny it fool yourselves for all I care.

Did the Carthaginians have a motive to form a republic? We know that their main goal was to have successful comercial industries but why did they not adopt their motherland Phoenicia's way of dealing with it? What would cause them not to become a republic and not an empire?
Also where did Carthage get this method from? The Greeks or just an old tradition?

The BCS system should be renamed: Let's give only one team an unfair advantage while the other teams must fight like Dogs.
Sure, but take Boise State for an example. They were alway disrespected and thought of as an inferior team because they were from the WAC. I'll tell you what their just that darn good and that's what I like about the BCS, go to a Bowl Game and it might be the best game you've ever seen.
Still in favor of a playoff though.

Here is a good link. Parthian Army (Use of Cataphracts and Horse Archers in relativity to the army)
Here is something that explains Parthia's tactics:
Historical tactics were typically quite simple. Horse archers would harass enemy formations with mounted archery; riding close enough to let loose their arrows and then retreating to resupply with arrows or when charged, sometimes changing to fresh horses. When the enemy was sufficiently disordered or weakened the cataphracts would initiate a thunderous charge of fully armoured men riding similarly armoured horses to smash through and ride down the unfortunate enemy. Parthian defeat often came when the ratio of cataphracts to horse archers was too high or when the charge came before the enemy was sufficiently disordered.
Also remember Han China did rely on mass armies of infantry even though they favored cavalry.
-
I said parthia's army with horsearchers/archers is more like han china than of rome,i said nothing about culture.
Yes, in terms of army absolutely but in terms of tactics and mindset no. Parthia favored a lot of heavy cavalry known as cataphracts. Han China's army was more like the Mughal army of India, primary use of horsearchers.
I referred to culture because it does have correlation with mindset and tactics.
-
Hey, Penn State beat Tennessee to show who really is the better team.
Sure but wait until March Madness, that's is when the real college fun begins.
-
Well using a lot of horsearchers and archers is tactics correct? When the general decides what troops to use that is tactics. And i still think parthia and han china are more the same in tactics and troops that of being very different, when comparing rome and parthia and rome and han china they are both very different of rome and the greeks.
I explained it the best I can. The Parthians contrasted from Han China, they did not know each other well. Philosophies on warfare were different despite favoring similar troops. Middle Eastern culture is much closer to Greece and Rome then the Orient.
-
The Carthaginian Senate is somewhat of a mystery to me. Although Carthage is said to be an oriental culture they adopted the Roman method of a Senate. The question is how did it operate? Was it similiar to Rome's or was if just another government differing from Rome? What say did it have in military, taxation, and rule?
-
I said parthia was more like han china than rome.Just do some research on han chian and parthia, they both favored movement/archers/cavarly over heavy infantry,if you deny it read some books.
Titus, I don't think anyone is questioning the use of archers and cavalry relative to Han China and Parthia. The only thing that is being challenged is that they were not similar in their uses and tactics. As was stated, one is Oriental the other Middle Eastern causing a contrast in styles of fighting.
For example, sub-Saharan Africans and Native Americans had the same type of tribal warfare however a lot of the aspects and concepts differed. Same applies here Parthia had a much different mindset and idea of warfare then did any Oriental culture.

To ramses the Great.
If you cannot debate with me without becoming pretty and bitchy then lets avoid discussions together.
Fine.
As for your cherry picked arguments... you contradict yourself. On one hand Christianity is being wiped out in the mid-East, on the other the government allows Bibles to be placed in hotel rooms. that doesn't sound very fanatical. What part of Western corportation did you not get? I told you there is nothing the Egyptian government can do about it, yet that very government neglects the plea of Christians.
And ifs its not my business about your ancestry why did you start the subject in an answer to my previous thread 'Oldest Families'?The reason why I can't find anything out about my ancestry is not a road I want to go down with. A lot of the archives were destroyed by Muslims. Another reason is a lot of my grandparents died before I got to meet them, and the only one I ever knew, I did not bother to ask any questions.
Egypt's not like Western Europe, I just can't find out easily or at all for that matter.
Maybe you should stick to "Craziest things ever done for beer" type threads. Its the level you work on.Fine.
And whether its Christian or Muslim owned hotels have an obligation to throw out hookers, maybe thats what your not being told. How else could such a downtrodden segment of Egyptian society save enough to start fresh in the West?I told you the truth, and I did not lie. To tell you the truth through what my ancestors have been through in Egypt from these catastrophies is something I don't take lightly. I can't debate with someone who says Islam is tolerant sitting cozily in England getting his facts from Muslim friends.

Happy New Year to everyone!
Docoflove, happy birthday eat, drink, and be healthy!

MSNBC reports a German man selling a dog to buy beer. We all know you can't deprive a German man of beer. Dog for beer.
My question to you is, what is the craziest thing you've done for beer and what would you do for beer?
