  1. roads were important, but sewage imo helped not only health issues but possibly moral of people too. i know id be happier with clean roads and not poo covered ones after all, if everyone was sick from disease coming from open sewage... how could they build roads?
  2. i forget where i heard this, i think a documentary of some sort... but i heard that sometimes smaller groups that had been sperated would form up in maybe a semi-circle or some other small defensive formation? is this true? also, you said that if they got to fighitng on their own, they wouldnt last long.. is that saying that the individual skill of the legionares was weak? were they only usefull in a cohesive unit?
  3. hmm im gonna agree wtih vic that its their helmet based on the two pics... if you look close in the pic you posted longbow, they dont seem to be wearing their helms. also you can sort of see an outline of the neck protection on the side of the part in question. prolly their helm
  4. well i dont reckon its armor, from my understanding it wasnt until the darkages/medieval times that armor had protection right there... usually on a suit of armor for jousting or other tournament like fighting. but i could be wrong.
  5. well, as with any new idea, a good campaign is the key. getting your word out. try to make the people your trying to reach see your point of view. make them also feel the need for a unified code of conduct. i suggest talking it over with your group first. then just spread through word of mouth for a while. once you have 3-4 groups with you, make up some flyers or pamplets or something... maybe hold a meeting sometime and invite as many re-enactors from different groups as you can.
  6. They say no plan survives contact with the enemy. as i sit here watching gladiator, and the opening battle, i thought to myself, "what did the legions do after the intial charge?" was it a free for all and simply stay alive? or was there still a formation they used? in my re-enacting, when our group gets scatterd we sound off the chain of command and regroup and then continue fighting. the romans did something of the like a assume? well what did they do?
  7. as a sort of re-enactor myself i can tell you that i personally wish people would be more historically accurate. if there were some sort of international re-enactor guidlines that individual groups could go by. that would help alot i belive. but unfortunatly there is no such thing short of the SCA, and even in the SCA its really a sort of "do what you think is right" attitude on how you do it. also i think the problem is, since people re-enact things from cenuries ago, few people REALLY know how things actually were. ya know?
  8. well ive been searching fora while now and i cant find the actual line that is said. but i can try to type it as it sounds. he says something thats ounds like this... " El seeta fookta unda" i know that would not be how it is spelled but maybe that will help you know what im talking about? i assume the "unda" would be along the lines of "you" and the "fookta" word would be along the lines of the F word. what do you guys think?
  9. well im sure you all know simply from being here that i have an interest in ancient history. well ive been trying to learn as much as i can but its all been scattered interests. a lil roman here, a lil greek there... a lil persian mixed with some scythian and celt. i have plans to become a history teacher in the future and im wonder, where is a good solid place to begin learning about ancient history? what should i start with? learning it all in this scattered pattern that ive been doing isnt helping me retain much that i have learned. and since there is no ancient history class in my school, i must do this all on my own untill i can get into a college for it.
  10. i will see if i cant find it then
  11. that is interexting how it is so similar to christianity...but if you think about it, all the major religions are very similar. what i find more interesting is as fatboy said, that it is still practised today. would that make it one of the longest living religions in existance?
  12. a friend asked me the other day what the germanic leader said in the opening scenes of Gladiator. i told him it was probably something along the lines of "go F' yourself!" but i may be very wrong. im sure you all know the line im talking about... but can you tell me what it really means?
  13. hey cen, i was looking at your site and in the images i noticed that your group helped make the documentary of hannible on the history channel? were you yourself in the show??
  14. scand, here is a group in the former group that i fought with, they are located in the maryland area... a lil far from you but you could maybe contect them for info about things... http://www.romanempire.net/romepage/ they are in the group Dagorhir... my groupd slipt from them for political reasons, we are called Belegarth. the groups we are in are mainly fantasy reenactment (which i dispise) but i myself try hard to do things from a historical aspect. as i said in the hobbies topic in the OT on here, i stated that i was making some armour that is scythian inspired. ther is an event i am going to on april 14th... if you guys would like i can post pics of it for you
  15. seeing as how i turned 18 today... it made me think, what did the romans do to celebrate a boy coming of age?
  16. the reenactment i do is a bit of a hobby i guess. im currently making some armor for it... im gonna post pics of it when im done for you all to see i also enjoy working on my car. and then theres my art but thats less of a hobby and more of a lifestyle for me.
  17. central illinois. town called charleston.
  18. scanderbeg.. when i say accident i dont necessarily mean "fluke" i mean that he did not leave greece saying "i am going to conquer the known world" he simply went out saying "i want persia to pay for what they have done to greeks" and in the process of making them pay he conquered the known world... is this not a correct statement?
  19. ^^ thats sortr of what my point was sparticus... he may have conqoured alot of land but it was sort of on accident. he only set out with the idea in his mind that he wanted the persian king. taking all the land was mearly the result of his crazed pursuit.

    King Arthur Review

one of them was in the deployment to get back the soldeirs there.. and the other was just stationed there. but no niether were actually the ones from the blackhawk...
  21. hmm.. i know the Men at Arms series have several diagrams and maps pertaining to the subject they were writen on. and they are several writen on romans. so off the top of my head i would suggest maybe looking into a few of those books.
  22. actually most northerners couldnt care less, we won its the southerners that hold a grudge if anyone does i reckon... and civil wars are just like any war. it will inevitably leave a scar, with emotions and physical damge. but all things heal with time...assuming you use the time wisely.

    King Arthur Review

longbow, in response to your blackhawk down question. i know a few people who were stationed there during this event and after watching the movie with them...i assure you its accurate...
  24. question guys... was alexander really even that great of a general? i mean yes he had a few brilliant manuever such as the ones he put on the persians, but i mean... what kind of opposition did he really have to conquer? his foes, as least in my opinion, were no wear near as dangerous or smart and cunning as the ones faced by the roman generals over time. and i think the only real reason he conquered all that he did was cuz of his overwhelming desire to capture the persian king... i guess what im asking is.. is alexander really known for being a great general or just simply because he conquered so much land?
  25. well, in belegarth, the re-enacment group im a part of... several realms (cities/groups) have made their own promotional videos, and some have even had commercials played on local tv channels. we do alot of demoing, at malls and such. we make pamplets... anything to get the word out there about us. once we get more people then we get a wide spread opinion on what should be done as a group. alot of realms have dues to pay in order to me a meber, usually its like 5$ every 6 months, and some units (smaller groups inside the realm) may pay higher dues for any such reason. as far as our structure, we have a national board at www.belegarth.com and on the fourms, there is a war council and they decide and vote on the rules and how we are portrayed and things of that nature... hope that has helped some what...
