  1. How exactly could have France and Britain 'sorted' out Hitler in 1937 and 1938? You know people tend over look the fact that the Soviet Union itself stated that it was its policy to make the world communist or more to the point communist and subserviet to the Soviet state. Also during this time the Soviets were committing mass genocide with the man-made famine in the Ukraine, one of historys worst crimes. Now the Allies wanted a stronger Germany at first to buffer themselves from the Soviet Union, and it seems to me they wanted Germany as a friend until Germany started getting friendly with the Soviet Union. But by then it was too late and war was ineviable. Its easy for us to look back at history and say 'well why didn't they stop Hitler when they had the chance" but from their point of view they saw the nightmare that was going on in the Soviet Union and the stated aim of Stalin and the Soviet state and they needed a buffer and that buffer was Germany. But the monster they helped create turned on them. Also on a side note one of the biggest and tragic hypocrises of the war was the universal scorn for Germany, which they rightfully deserved after their invasion of Poland, but their seems to be no mention of even a whimper of protest against the Soviet Union's invasion of not only of Poland but also of Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia.
  2. Actually he wasn't a "chieftain" he was a High King. Wasn't Gnaeus Julius Agricola who said Hibernia could be conquered with one legion?
  3. I don't want to seem bitter but but there was nothing about that episode i liked. Pullo and Vorenus are nothing but traitors who murder their own fellow Roman soldiers to protect a enemy of Rome. Pullo especially seems to revel in the fact he is betraying Octavian even though Octavian treats him with more respect and friendship than Pullo deserves. I found myself cheering for Memmio and Octavian in the series, at least they didn't kid themselves what they wanted was supreme power, unlike Vorenus and Pullo who had to give grain to the people in order to deal with the crimes they were commiting. Also the fact that Atia was allowed to not only live but laugh in everyones face and that all the crimes she committed during the series was noble just really bothered me. But the very ending of the show with Caesarian swearing vengeance on Octavian Caesar while walking hand in hand with Pullo through the streets of Rome was the icing on the cake. I hope there is never a season 3, because they butchered what could of been a fine show.

  5. I would agree that Sulla as the most responsible, though this could be debated. At least Sulla voluntarily gave up his Dictatorship something i don't think Caesar would have done.
  6. It was a great victory because the Germans encircled an entire Soviet front, and killed and captured nearly a million soviet soldiers.
  7. Thebes during Xerxes invasion was the biggest supporter of the Persians in Greece during the invasion and fought fanatically with them at Plataea, now after the Greeks expelled the Persians from the Greek mainland, did Thebes suffer any punishment. If i were the Greek city-states i would have been incensed at Thebes fanatical support of the Persians. But it seems that Thebes really suffered no backlash for its involvement in the Persian Wars. Am i wrong about this? Was the growing rivally between Athens and Sparta the reason Thebes seemed to escape punishment?
  8. One of the greatest victories in the history of warfare was the German capture of Kiev in 1941. Its really unbelievable how criminal incompetent soviet military leaders were during the German invasion, i guess you can thank stalin for that.
  9. Augusta a point was made on this thread that conventional armies that purposefully attack civilian populations are as much terrorists as those that trap bombs to their chests and blow up resorts. Now just just looking at history, the british army has done this numerous times throughout the occupation of Ireland. But you are right we don't need to get into a huge dispute over this, so this will be my last post on the subject. PAX
  10. Augusta i am going to have to strongly disagree with you. Cowardly is members of the British Parachute Regiment firing into a crowd of unarmed and peaceful protesters and murdering 14 of them, including people who were shot in the back trying to run away. Cowardly is the british army putting nail bombs into the pockets of a dead boy to try to prove that a crowd seeking civil rights was armed. Cowardly is the british government who whitewashed and exonerated the actions of their army during the protest. But after all its only the Irish who were murdered, why blame the british army for actions that they have been doing for centuries in Ireland!!!
  11. I liked the 300 alot, so much so i will probaly pay to see it again. As far as the historical accuracy goes well the producers themselves said it was not a documentary on the battle but a movie version of a graphic comic book. I would like to see anyone on here name one movie that is absolutely accurate, except for maybe Downfall that was very close to accurate. Wow i really thought that the Persians had guys with blade arms and other mutants in their army, i mean come on people its a freaking movie based on a comic book.
  12. what about the Battle of the Metaurus. If Hasdrubal had linked with Hannibal's army in Italy Rome may have had been burned to the ground and had its soil salted instead of Carthage.
  13. Some notorious examples in history of that would be, what the Crusaders did to the population of Jerusalem after the fall of Jerusalem during the First Crusade, oliver cromwell's horrid actions against the Irish poplulation in Ireland, and the equal crimes of both the Germans and Soviets on the Eastern Front against the civilian populations of both countries.
  14. Are you really serious about that statement!! How is blowing yourself up at a market a "tactic". Its the cowardly fanatics at the top, setting out other fanatics at the bottom to kill as many civilians as possible, because apparently when you blow yourself up and kill women and children with you, you go to some kind of afterlife paradise!!!! Its a cowardly act used by people who are blinded by religious hate.
  15. Well for one thing the reason that the fascist and nazi parties were popular and had influence was a massive fear of Soviet communism, which was reasonable considering the Comintern's activities in other nations. One of the reasons that Japan attacked the US was because it lost a series of border wars to the Soviet Union in 1939, so they decided it would be more easier to take on the British, French and Americans in the South than the Soviets in the north. Also lets not forget that the Soviet Union also invaded Poland from the east in 1939, and invaded Finland in 1940 which resulted in horrendous losses for the Red Army. Also during the 20's and 30's politicians such as Winston Churchhill wanted a stronger Germany as a buffer against the Soviet Union. In the end a global war was ineviable, and the stupidest thing Hitler could of done was declare war on the US.
  16. Hopefully Atia will finally gets whats coming to her in the finale episode but looking at next weeks previews it doesn't look likely. A quick question, how many years passed between this episode and A Necessary Fiction, was it 5 years? All the children are getting older except Vorenus's oldest daughter apparently. Although a third season will probaly never happen, they did slightly leave the door open for a third season. They introduced Herod the Great, we have timon going to jerasulem, and the whole zealot side plot makes no sense unless they wanted to build on that in another season. If there was a third season i think it may have a entirely new cast with maybe one or two originals thrown in the mix. Also after season one didn't hbo say there would not be a season two?
  17. No there not resolved at all. If they were Orangemen would not march through Catholic neighborhoods!!!!!!!!
  18. What i meant was local religious leaders wanting to wipe out all traces of roman influence in their area, such as roman culture, military, and government, and not neccessary Rome the city itself, though some probaly wanted too. Sorry about the confusion. Gaius Suetonius Paulinus actually attacked the druid stronghold at mona which allowed Boudica to revolt in his absence, and i don't believe that the Druids were neutralized until Gnaeus Julius Agricola became governor. the Sicarii did want to wipe out Rome, because i think they believed that only descdents from david could rule judea. They killed other jews because they believed they were collarbarating with Rome or they didn't support armed rebellion against Rome. They believed that their god was going to descend from heaven and destroy the Roman legions. But all they accomplished was turning Rome more vicious in response to the jewish revolts, and they actually did alot more damage than any good for judea.
  19. I was wondering besides the jewish zealots, was there any religion or sect that declared it was there religious duty to wipe out Rome in order to restore their religious or nationalist supremacy.
  20. Actually Gnaeus Julius Agricola the governor of Britain crushed a revolt by the Ordovices in Wales around year 77. After that revolt i don't know of any major rebellions in Wales against Roman authority, so i don't believe wales needed any special watching.
  21. How about tarring and feathering someone. You didn't die from it but i can't imagine anything more humilating, especially when it was done in front of a large group of people.
  22. So i was watching Elizabeth I on HBO but fell asleep (hbo east). Has anyone else saw this. i never saw the end of it but it seems whenever there are movies/series about elizabeth I (PBS), they never mention the fight for independence by the Irish led by Hugh O'Neill, 2nd Earl of Tyrone, if it wasn't for Hugh O'Neill,Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex might have lived a happier life. Anyway just a thought to anyone out there that enjoys English history.
  23. I am very fasinated by the idea of a modern Roman Empire and am tempted to buy this book, but the reviews are not that great and i was wondering if anyone here read it, is it worth the the money to buy it and the time to read it?
  24. How about Edward II of England. He was killed by putting a red hot iron rod up his anus, or Vlad the Impaler who set people on poles with the pole in their anus and as they slide down the pole it slowly got wider until eventually they were split apart.
  25. Actually Washington was burned in 1814. No but it helps to have the population of your country for the war as well and thats what the Maine sinking did, turned the American people against Spain. There was so much hatred on both sides for each other that sound judgments were not a priority. York and Newark in canada get burned, so the British burn Washington DC, Buffalo NY and Lewiston NY. Veteran British soldiers of the Penisular War against france were horriefied at how fiercious the American troops were fighting, especially at Lundys Lane, and the constant burning and looting. British admirals Cockburn and Cochrane particularly hated the Americans and it was Cockburn that personally had Washington burned.
