I forgot to mention that the movie "Dacii" has a brief scene showing the decimation of the Rhine Legion. I've read about it in books, but this is the first time I saw it in a film.

Here you go Ghost. I'm not sure how to post a link without the actual Utube file appearing. Not sure moderators approve of it. This is Episode One/Part One of 10. There are three episodes which makes the series quite long but I enjoyed it over several evenings. Couldn't they find a baboon who would ride in that chair? Also wanted to add that I have "Constantine and The Cross" bookmarked to start watching next.

From Decimus Caesar's list, I chose "Dacii" and found it online. Just finished watching it, and I must say it was entertaining, altho had to watch with subtitles. I never did figure out what language it was. Also, I never saw such a variety of costumes in such patterns and colors. Some of the plumes on the helmets were sensational! Oh, and if you thought the rain dance in Chelsmford 123 was great, wait until you see the one in this film. But, all kidding aside, I cared enough for the characters to watch the whole thing. Just finished watching this television mini series from 1984 online. Not too bad. Was anxious to get to the episodes featuring the eruption to see how that was handled. Again, not too shabby. I did begin to wonder if the only dogs in Pompeii were Border Collies, but then near the end there was a German Shepherd down and being covered in ash - not something spastic Border Collies would lay still long enough for I'm sure.

Do it, Ghost, do it! You know you want to. It was on Turner's Movie Classics channel over here and probably will be repeated at some point.

I tried to find the clip, but instead found a later scene of TVQ and the Roman racing chariots which wasn't too bad. Going back to that opening scene, I read this: Crew or equipment visible: Production equipment clearly visible at end of opening scene, when Tristram (Patrick Troughton) rides away from Romans in chariot. Look for a light blue cloth covering a cart of white and stainless steel objects, perhaps the film crew's lunch wagon, just as the chariot turns away. The more I read and look at video clips, the more I think I should have watched this film.

I really wish you could see the opening scene I mentioned (as the credits roll - not the one in the trailer), it's totally insane. Makes the chariot race in Ben Hur seem tame.

Saw a little bit of this movie on TV last night - while watching the scene during the opening credits with the two guys in the chariot racing across the terrain, all I could say is YIKES! how did they keep from falling out of that thing! Eh - it wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be. When I saw the bit about King Tut begin, I thought "Again!?" Why do we have to hear this story in every documentary about Egypt? At least they didn't dwell very long on it. And of course Zahwi Hawass had to show up, entering the Great Pyramid. It was quite interesting though about finding the unknown pyramids.

I finally finished Steven Saylor's "Roman Blood", first in his mystery series with Gordianus as his main character. I borrowed it from the library and had to renew in order to have time to finish it, which I rarely if ever have done in the past with a book. Perhaps I was just burned out on mysteries after reading all 21 books in the Marcus Didius Falco series, but I struggled through "Roman Blood". I did like the characters, and the story was ok; but I decided not to continue with the other books in the series - at least not for now. Instead, I reserved Robert Harris's "Imperium" from the library and hope to begin that in a couple weeks.

Wikipedia says 13 episodes total. I've watched quite a few so I'm pretty sure I'm on season two already. And I mispelled the latin, should have been "Odi Et Amo?" not "Aimo". By the way, it was a pretty funny episode. Yes, I have a DVD player that plays USA and region two DVDs, bought it special because I became hooked on the "Victorian Farm" BBC series and had to buy that and the entire other "Farm" series of DVDs. Great last episode! That was fun, esp. when there was nothing good on TV. Thanks for bringing the series to my attention.

I've watched many episodes on Utube and so far have had no problems one after another. Only, I'm suddenly confused that I may not be watching them in order. Aulus's character now has blonde hair and there are new opening credits - so I'm not sure if I'm still in Season One or not. It's the same actor, no? I'm ready to watch "Odi Et Aimo" Part 1. I agree, the DVDs would be a much better quality of picture too altho the Utube's aren't bad.

After reading these posts, I did a search for the series on Utube. Finally found all 40 episodes at one web site and so far have watched the first part of Episode One, Season One. This was a great show! I should write our PBS station and beg them to buy it.

Thanks. I never thought about them possibly being wooden structures, afterall it WAS a long time ago. I guess I'm just fascinated by finds like this. You're absolutely right about vegetation taking over sites. I found the stone floor of a trellis structure I built years ago and had collapsed. I spent half a day removing layers of grass and dirt. In order to keep it uncovered, I have to be diligent.
