  1. What did you think of the Titan pics from the Cassini mission ?
  2. True enough, it did have that implication, which as you've pointed out is not the case. My only point was that the street level violence of the triumvirate had a precedent. So are you saying that by nature an oligarchy does not respect the rights of the people ?
  3. I will get howled down for this, but "regime change" seems a distinctly Roman policy ala Armenia. Client kingdoms, friend and ally status......
  4. Actually I'd say no more prominent during the Triumvirate than in earlier times...what about the Tribune Sulpicius' Anti-Senate ? Extended rioting was involved after he unveiled his plans for legislation, crowds (including his personal gaurd of 3000 swordsmen) fighting in the forum and streets of Rome. Attempted intimidation of Senators and violent retaliation on their part exsisted since the time of the Gracchi. In the case of Sulpicius, Senators were behind it.
  5. Sorry, but "I read somewhere" is not evidence. Yeahhh....thanks for "filling me in". Give me a classical description of one that was used for re-enforcment.
  6. Do we know when Caesar produced the first ?
  7. When was this first done ? There seem to be many coin portraits of other Romans dating from 56, 54 BC. When did Caesar produce his first ?
  8. mquish mquish mquish :- You don't have to provide a link, but must give credit where due, but you can post a link by using the "insert link" button (next to the underlined A, the globe of the earth with the white loop on it) You can just give credit by pasting the URL and naming the source. Your good intentions are noted, and you can certainly post information from another website, but, if you copy something from a website or other source and paste it in a post, CREDIT IT. If you use a source without giving the source credit - you are committing Plagiarism. In future, if you have questions of this nature - don't hijack a thread like this - just reply to my PM, or send one yourself to one of the moderating team. - (To find out who they are hit the My assistant link next to the View new post link). Now Mquish, let that be an end to it. All further communication regarding these matters will be by personal message from you, or you will be placed on moderated status.
  9. Taken verbatim from Wikipedia. Mquish, you must give credit to your sources when posting.
  10. Wrong, you can choose to believe that theory if you like, but I don't. I need solid evidence, of which there seems to be little - unless you have it prometheus.
  11. It would seem not. Have you read the earlier pages in the thread where numerous other special troops are mentioned ?
  12. To quote Goldsworthy :- With regard to carrying ballistae around Gaul, Caesar engaged in seige regularly, which was where the ballistae was mostly used, clearing walls of defenders, and hindering them in their attempts to interrupt other siege work, towers, earth works etc.
  13. No, neither would I......unless I was wearing my new Roman themed T-Shirt that is.
  14. Post your photo in the gallery, then we can tell if you really are a "style queen".
  15. I'm assuming you mean "wasn't actually Irish ?" If he was kidnapped from Wales then he would have been welsh.
  16. So you just mean that the front ranks can be replaced by those in the rear, but only in a lull in fighting when the men can break ranks and reform. I don't think there's enough extant information to extrapolate all you are saying, but as I have no alternate theory, I'm arriving at the conclusion that we simply don't know. I do agree that the "strap grabbing" in HBO sounds like invention.
  17. And it's a very good reason too. Could you give me an example of what you are talking about in terms of re-enforcement during a lull in fighting ? I ask because I can't recall one myself.
  18. Viggen - has he also broken Austrian gun laws ? Carrying a hand gun ? Concealed weapon ?
  19. Good one Ulpii. I'll add this quote Gwyn Morgan, from his book (69AD).
  20. Nice pick up Caldrail . yes.....yes they did. Makes sense. cheers
