  1. I don't know the latin, and they're slightly paraphrased, but here are my top 3 - 3) "The die is cast" - Julius Caesar I like the double meaning. Not only does it signify the gamble he is taking by confronting Pompey, but it also eludes to the fact that there is no going back, and he cannot know the outcome until the die lands. 2) "At last, now I can begin to live like a human being" - Nero, upon the completion of the Golden house Ah the arrogance! No matter what you think of Nero, he had style. 1) "That it is within my power to rule over you for life is evident, but I am mild by nature, and have no wish to dominate" Augustus A tactical masterstroke. They made him Princeps after that statement - he knew Rome was not ready for another civil war.
  2. Just bought some books from ebay, could possibly do one for next months review, as I'm sure some of them are required reading for people here. TACITUS ON BRITAIN AND GERMANY JULIUS CAESAR - THE GALLIC WAR & OTHER WRITINGS GIBBON'S DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE Caesar, Julius; The Battle for Gaul JOHN HOGUE - Nostradamus & the Millennium Not sure if they're the exact titles as I pasted them from my ebay summary. That last one is just a bit of fun. So, which should I read first? p.s, I'm away for a week or so, so I won't be able to reply for a while.
  3. I dunno, but I've just bought a batch of books from eBay. Two concern Caesar's Gaelic adventures (one is his own writings). I'll list the books in a new thread tomorrow. Caesar was definately a colourful character, and was eager to portray himself in a good light (particularly during the Gaelic wars, he had to flee Rome and join the legions, and was keen to return to Rome in Glory). I would be very suprised if he didn't embelish his conquests. The thing I expect most to learn is that he exaggerated the number of tribesmen his armies killed. I think they had to slaughter a certain amount to earn a "triumph" (or a similar word, it slips my mind atm). Whilst he almost definately notched up enough kills, I can't help but feel he increased the figure a bit.
  4. http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/romans/ I would assume that most of the info is accurate as it is from a reliable source. I liked the one about the collosseum.
  5. Well, I also think that Gibbon was an excellent historian. Fans of his may want to get a BBC documentary about some of his stuff on Caracalla, geta, Pertinax, and a few others. I think they will probably sell it on DVD, here's a starting point - http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/documentaries...s-genius2.shtml
  6. The flood control is too severe. 60 seconds is too long to wait in this day and age. I think it should be changed to 30 if possible.
  7. Mine is Proffessor Keith Hopkins. My favourite ancient historian is Tacitus.
  8. I have a bit of knowledge on the great Caesars and Emperors (i.e Caesar, Augustus, Nero, Hadrian, Constantine, Justinian).
  9. Eh, in my last post in this thread I said Corbulo, for his victory at Actium. Doh. I meant Agrippa (though he wasn't a general). What's the Roman equivalent of Admiral?
  10. I live in Whitley Bay (or, as some have been known to call it, $*****y gay), a seaside town about 20km from Newcastle.
  11. No. I am English. So is Longbow. A few more too probably. p.s where in the north you from?
  12. Gotta love those beach assault pics. If I was in the military, I'd probably go for paratroops. Beach assaults would be too hellish. Or maybe french foreign legion. I watched a series called "escape to the legion" recently, it was brilliant (I missed the first one, I hope they repeat it). p.s thanks for the link LB, it was an interesting read.
  13. About the push-ups - do you get to rest? I can do 65 max, but that only takes 1 minute. Maybe 75 would be possible for me after a 20 second break. Also, how long after doing the push ups do you do the sit ups? Is it push ups then sit ups straight away?
  14. the British had a SAS terrotetorial unit (part timers, same as your national guard)i think they were disbanded after the first gulf war after its members were moaning about the amount of time spent away from there works.I dont think it went down too well with the regular SAS troops who werent allowed into the Gulf because of other duties. L Eh? The sas we're in the gulf. They patrolled the scud alley, generally calling in airstrikes. Did a pretty good job of it if what I heard is true. Saddam practically stopped dropping scuds on Israel over-night. Also, are you sure the sas had a "part-timer" regiment? Doesn't sound too logical to me.
  15. Nix Imperial Nix Imperial 2 Can't vouch for them, but it's a start. Jim. Thanks. That is a useful page (and I think I see one of the swords on there )
  16. I haven't seen I, Claudius either. However, I have seen I, Caesar (a series of 6, made by seventh arts, shown on UK history). A totally EXCEPTIONAL series, I would reccomend it to anyone. The visuals are excellent, and the narrator is a god amongst broadcasters). It covered Caesar, Augustus, Nero, Hadrian, Constantine, and Justinian. As I say, truly excellent (surely some of you UK guys have also seen it? Back me up here guys!). P.s, you can still but it from seventh arts website. It is hideously expensive, but if you can afford it, get it! http://www.seventh-art.com/pastproduction.asp (bottom right of page). Oh yeah, they also did "Nero's golden house" (also good, not a patch on I, Caesar though).
  17. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...6547679564&rd=1 What about this one? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...6546070231&rd=1 or this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...6547262030&rd=1
  18. Images of varying quality (also, try a google image search). http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/imag...1&cop=&ei=UTF-8
  19. Looking for info on Roman iconography for ideas on my next tattoo. To see my previous tattoo, check this thread - http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=1772&
  20. Hmmm, skimmed the thread, but not read it in great detail, mainly because I don't believe in the conventional explaination of god given to us through the bible. I personally see religion as a form of control. In ancient times, when christianity was founded, control of the population was very difficult without some form of cohersion such as religion. It also gives people something to hope for, to look forward to. George Orwell had a particularly good analogy in the book "Animal Farm", when he had one of his characters call heaven "sugar loaf mountain" (I think it was the crow). (having said that, the god theory is no more incredulous or fantastical than the "big bang" theory. I suppose my beiefs lie somewhere in the middle of these two theories).
  21. Google earth is amazing. My location is marked on this thread - http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums/viewth...tid=9385&page=1 (Dammekkos2, North East of England).
  22. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Searc...=roman%2Bcities http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Searc...ch=roman+cities The info is possibly slightly generic (I haven't read it yet), but it's a start. I'll try and find more tomorrow.
  23. Yeah, some of them are pretty nice actually. I especially like- http://leadwarrior.com/M51.htm http://leadwarrior.com/M44.htm http://leadwarrior.com/M38.htm http://leadwarrior.com/M25.htm Might have to get me some (grrr, got too many unpainted already, never enough hours in the day! ) I'll tell the guys at my painting forum about that site, thanks LW.
  24. Thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately I haven't done any Roman miniatures as of yet. The main problem is that I haven't found any sculpts that I really like (which is important, as my spare time is somewhat limited these days). One miniature that I've been desperate to get is this one- http://www.coolminiornot.com/13906 (you may have to click the link twice, sometimes a random picture is generated). Sadly the company that produces this is very small and isn't currently trading. I once saw a scale miniature of Russel Crow (Gladiator) that I really wanted, but it was
  25. Some of my minis Very time consuming, so I don't get as much done as I used to, but very relaxing too. I know a lot of histiry fans like wargwmes, I only paint, but got into the hobby through gaming. The best ones are on the second page (and you'll no doubt notice where I got my inspiration for names ) Feel free to vote (you don't have to be a member, just click on a picture and the score bar will appear on the left of the page).
