Great for carrying, but in battle I would absolutely *have* to flip my hand over. maybe its just me, my my hand hurts just THINKING about that grip. Besides, the thumb is the weakest point of anyone's grip.
As I said in the thread, you would have been obliged to practise with a much heavier shield in training , your a tough customer from upcountry ..perhaps you would have been inurred to the privation!

Again Pertinax great pictures. If only the ruins would have stayed together.
Thank you all for the comments, Wordsworth wrote part of a poem about this site -I think the romantic wildness carried him away, something about "castles in the air where Jove and Mars were worshipped"

Nice pics m8,what breed of Pony are they riding?
Thanks Longbow-Welsh ponies (as opposed to cobs-but I dont suppose a cross betwen the two would have been a bad mix) , though they have a touch of the Dales about them.

Ah. I guess in the picture they look smaller than they actually are, lol I was wondering if they weren't closets
The closets are those niches you commented on previously.

MY CAR COULD!!
Lol but yea, I can imagine it would be a bad place to break down
I once had a tyre explode at the very top of this road-coming down this direction-that is why I love the main car we have-a big volvo, I ran it all the way down on three wheels (you cant pull over!) and it handled very well all the way.

TNOG?
The Nectar of Gods...as in beer.....mmmm beer

What are all the really tiny rooms for?
Its a suite of rooms-the usual suspects for a bathhouse -cool, warm , hot, cold dip
-
Wow, rough terrain, eh?
Pretty though
This is the highest driveable pass in England. If your car is not in good shape it wont make it up here.

How tall would those walls have been when they were complete?
around 7 feet perhaps with a slate or tile roof.
-
Wow, did you get to see inside it?
Certainly it is still used every day.
-
::melty eyes:: ooo I so want to go there!!!
Please watch Pantagathus' "TNOG" site over the next few days-my review of the route to the Fort might interest you as well.

lol is this a joke on my new tat? (which seems to be healing btw)
Excellent picture. I was (relatively) unaware of the uses for foxglove.
The white version of this plant grows wild at my dad's.

Was Corbridge a Legionary fortress, as the map suggests?
Yes but Flavian in origin and hence "below " the Wall, however it was,and remained a very important supply pivot in later times. The Vicus was very large as well. When I return to the Wall it wil be my next major photo recce.

I know that place - cement works at Shap, Cumbria!
The same!

The equipage is supposed to authentic (and with cinches) but I am no expert-however at the next event I will try to have a longer chat with the mounted Auxilliae.

How do I get invited to dinner? Once again, great pics.
Lot of roughage for the intestine id say.And thank you.

This is the site of Herculaneum the up market coastal resort town destroyed at the same time as Pompeii in AD 79 , and about 15 minutes away by train. The excavation is a huge hole in the ground at the foot of the modern suburban dwellings of Naples.

Do you know what that 'rut' is going down the central isle?
That is the central drainage channel between the barrack blocks (for surface water runoff).
-
It kind of looks like the Meditterranian.
It was a port of course-indeed you are looking at what was the dock level before Vesuvius buried it.As I am stood on the modern ground level you get the idea of how much pyroclastic material fell on the area.

do I detect a hint of A wing? That chap should get a higher seat, hes obviously using this expensive craft as a phallic extension. Nicely done , how do you get those textures?
-
absolutely top notch!

Lol yea. I'll see if I can get the ambulances out of there. lol I doubt it'll work but it'll give me something to do.
Ive hacked away at this and tried to blur the vehicles out-but they still look too obvious, any help appreciated!

I will post a shot of one.
