  1. The boar is certainly a popular ancient motif-wild pigs being very dangerous critters.

Good start with the captions there-drawing attention to the effeminate nature of the decadent east...

I thought " You know , since I got this helmet I keep getting terrible migraines"

  2. Which part of the tree?

My zoom won't do much good for a real closeup of the mistletoe, it's pretty high up there.

And leaves are coming out fast!

The mistletoe itself if at all possible. Its very rare here and it would be good to get a shot for the Herbal gallery given the significance of the plant and the ceremonial involved.

that being the link to a botanical plate and some druidic info in my Herbal Gallery

  3. Look at all the water. That really isn't good for preservation. It's amazing how Hadrian's Wall has withstood the British weathering.

1 minute later I was driven off site by some very painful hail. The plentiful water is a significant reason for the siting of the defences in this area

  4. Quite cool

Thank you. Freezing more like. Note please that the Mithraium is kept small purposefuly, the sense of claustrophobia is alleged to be intimate with the cult, if as some say this involves the "burial" (literally) of the initiate followed by re-birth to the light . The internal colour scheme is suggested to have been deep blood red and yellow ochre, with elaborate fresco motifs.

  5. Who are these people and where are they?

I didnt see your post Gaius! They are a-Viking re-enactors at an a-Viking festival in the village of Burnsall in North Yorkshire. There was very little pillaging, the "who has the best beard and whiskers " contest was the fiercest encounter other than the swordplay (and axe play if you could call it that).

  6. Pertinax - did you ever see that 80s series of Robin Hood, Clannad soundtrack. Robin was characterised as a devotee of Herne ?

Yes I did , and quite well done to. At first the "merry men" were not tooo keen on Robin as the Chosen of Hern.

Most interesting then that Silvanus is a deity of the Roman devotees of the hunt.
