yea, they can be really impressive. ::tries to imagine herself doing the same thing and realizes she can only imagine herself falling off::
I think the size of the tough little ponies is important-this would be very much like the native American preference for smaller sinewy animals over heavyweight chargers. You have a tight turning circle, sure footedness and endurance.

Wow I can't get over how awkward that saddle must be! I bet they are really hard to ride.
Lol his helmet looks a little less goofy from that angle.
Awkward perhaps ..but ..these guys were flying! and delivering missles .

I shall upload a closer shot for you...
look at the image "Kontos"

lol I actually have had a few past lives in Rome
Is it just me or does the front of that one guy's helmet look a little weird? Like, smushed or something.
The face piece is flatish , so it looks quite sinister in a robotic sort of way

Lol yea maybe I *was* someone else (I'm being perfectly serious. I believe in reincarnation. )
I didnt doubt it

There were two Cornicern at the event, both were capable players.

That looks alot like a place near where I live. Or maybe not. But I could swear I've seen that view before. It's kind of creepy actually how familiar that place looks.
You are lookinh NE from Banna ,the ruins of the Wall lie just out of shot to the left. Perhaps you were someone else?

It looks so fern-like! Is there any relationship?
All the plants mentioned in the post attached to the image are types of carrot or rather of the carrot family. They tend to unfurl in a fern like manner during initial growth , but true ferns are a separate genus.

will be useful to those in N America, notice please the colouration of the Hemlock stems.

to keep it simple-1.celts 2. the Legion crushed them

Aren't those legionaries a little pale?
I love that Cornu. I want one. (I am a great collector of musical instruments. I have currently a flute, an native american "flute", a recorder, a fife, "thumbdrums", a guitar and a harmonica. Want to guess which one of those things I actually play? )
such is the curse of the Brigantine climate.
do you perhaps play the native flute?

Everything is accurate, in this picture. I like how they had the shields square so that people would understand how it functions. Looks interesting, who were they fighting? Who won?
I was impressed with the various uniforms/kit I have a lot more photos and a blog to post yet so your questions will be answered in the blog! Glad you liked the picture.

Why did the Romans build such a formidable wall, if there were barely any attacks? Paranoia perhaps... it seemed the more north the Romans went the more scared they were.
Ironic though, the nicest people I know and my best friends are Scottish.
One thing that strikes me about "the idea of Rome" is that the use of vast, "confident" , structures has a huge symbolic value to the Empire and certianly must be culturally/technologically daunting to anyone else. If you want my opinion id say the Wall is customs barrier/policing infrastructure (for both sides of the area), and very occassionaly an actual fortified combat zone.If I recall Vircoviciunm was attacked in approx AD179, AD 279 and AD 320 ish and finally burnt very late (maybe AD400ish) with a minimal garrison. So you could have a career on the Wall without ever having combat contact (if you were allowed to saty in one spot).

talk about laid back.

Do you get many fish off the coast such as Norway does. Or is it a bit warmer by the nice Continental breeze? Either way, if the water was somewhat warm I'd have a go.
Plenty of fish here, though more "longshore" Id say , this is a great windsurfing spot , the tide comes in very lively. But warm? mmm "bracing" is the best word.

As presented, its one of the best artistic shots you've ever posted!
IThank you most kindly. I roamed around the area and took quite a few shots , but this was the only one that I felt strongly about , you can never tell till youve sat back and looked at a shot on screen-this obliged me to try monochrome!

That is a marvelous and awe inspiring picture Pertinax. You truly are a great photographer. You're a jack of all traits, you do it in the forum and finish in the gallery.
Well that is a serious compliment-you can see me blushing as I type! Thank you very much.I have a "stitched" three photo improvement on this shot , but its too large for the gallery constraints on site. I have added a "stitched experiments " gallery to my msn blog , if you search for "Burrow 2" it gives a better impression as to why the fort had strategic significance. There are also shots at Banna, Vindolanda and Glannaventa.

ill test the shot on here see what you think

see the violence inherent in the system!

Makes me think of "The lady of the lake" ????
Have a look at the "Three Nymphs" shot on my msn blog (in the Cilvrinum Fort gallery). Some very watery references.

regardless of how easy you say they were to make ,they look good. Great colours.
-
Quite cool
The Batavii always seem to get the "amphibious ops" jobs-here we are at a major fortified river crossing site.Their choice of deity is most appropriate to their skills.
-
That's a very tranquil setting
When the baths were operative I suspect not-the actual Wall was where I am stood, and at this point it was formed into a fortified bridge to carry it across the River.

OO ballistics!! I want to build a sling at some point too. Haven't got around to it. When I do, I'll let you know how it works out
even a small "toy" sling hurts ! my 3rd knuckle right hand is living proof.
-
That actually appears to be "scale mail" (someone want to help me with the latin here? lol)
It's normally "segmentata" but I've seen both spellings. I usually end up saying "segmenta" too
thank you LW I have the photo titles mixed up!

What is it's material?
An unbvelievably well preserved oak I believe.
Centurion of Deva Victrix
in Roman Gallery

Im afraid not, he remained in undress uniform during the day as he was from a separate unit to LEG VIII, promoting educational works. However , for Madame Pertinax's birthday I was hoping to take her to Deva (Chester) where he commands the guard unit and is tour guide for Roman antiquities.
