  1. Pertinax, how large are these clusters in general? More than an inch or two?

There is a small plant similar to that growing around my sisters house in the mountains. Flowers are tighter in the cluster though.

I tried to take a picture of it to aid in identification but made the huge mistake of not turing on my close up macro... The result was three very out of focus shots because the camera did not auto focus in the right place. :(

the individual "gloves" are perhaps 2 inches long .This is a european range original.

  2. The whack on the back seems to have healed. Could it be from two separate wounds? How is it known that it was a warrior? Could be one of the lads with a penchant for loud discussions and a bellicose neighbor.

I suspect the rear one is a burst cranial suture rather than an impact, if it had healed he must have been prone to migraines.

  3. You sure stand out in more ways than one. Is that a flash bouncing off of the hair of the girl at thr right?

No -its an ornament! Though this is a scanned shot from a disposable camera-when I travelled East I used to take minimal luggage and equipment , id buy a bunch of disposables at the airport , I think they did quite well in the circumstances.

  4. No sir, :)

If you remember from my article on TNOG, I served on an Aircraft Carrier. That looks like a marine amphibius ship of some type or a mine sweeper (judging by the H53s on deck)

Here is the picture of my ship in HK harbor as displayed on TNOG. I'll post a better picture later from home.

I did remember! I just wondered if your posting was to one vessel only

  5. Hmm, so that's where all my Michigan snow went this winter!?! I believe we may have had the lightest snow fall winter in recorded history this year. Actually now that I think about it you folks can keep it :(

Looks nice, but you can keep it. Worst winter here for a long time-probably 40 years id say. When I was driving I realised I was alone on the road and had to decide where to walk to if the car wouldnt wade the next drift, I was unable to turn about because the roads were down to a couple of shallow ruts . As an aside this particular road is said to be the most dangerous in the world-quite a claim , but its a fast , winding road through broken country that attracts many bikers-with a serious casualty rate. I suspect its actually the road with the most recorded accidents..

  6. Looks like a perfect setting for hot chocolate & peppermint schnapps!

My response was more prosaic, Fish and Chips with mushy peas and a pint of Black Sheep.Having got seriously cold in the car attempting to get to this little oasis I slept for 12 hours with such a firm ballast.

  7. LMAO I love that scene!!! I laughed so hard....

I LOVE the part when everyone stones the guy who's ordering the stoning. There's a similar part in The Holy Grail with the "knights who say 'ni'"

What sad times are these when passing ruffians may say "ni" to an old lady!

  8. Same artist? This guy is really good! Looks like watercolor is it?

Im not sure LW -if you go into amazon and look at the Osprey books he is a major contributor: the "Gladiator " book is very good-some personal favourites of mine are "Warriors and Warlords" ( a sampler across many periods-Pict to Zulu, Arthurian Briton to Bucaneer) "New Kingdom Egypt" some excellent renderings of the Nakhtu Ah (close combat troopers , the "strong arm boys " as they called themselves) and "The Normans" . showing Norman , Gael , Saxon and Siculo-Norman."Roman Legionary 58 BC -69 AD" is one of the very best.

  9. That looks something like the pic in the book I found, except for the helmet of the "oven man" was pointed instead of rounded.

Yes there are many helmet variants, the earlier types( 2nd C AD) are pronouncedly conical. The helmet shown here also turns up in Scandanavia as a trade item.

  10. It was the head on a pole bit that made me grimace.

Me too.....but with excitement ! Those heads all lined up would have been some deterrent.

    I blame the Auxilliae..

This made me reflect-lots of people use maces for close up and nasty combat, I dont recall any Roman soldier attested as carrying one-anyone know anything to the contrary?

  11. Wow! Those are quite funny looking! I'm guessing they fit into the slots in the lock? Though, the angle seems quite awkward. How was the lock mounted so that the one trying to open the door would be able to get the key in there?

Im trying to work the logic out myself-you would anticipate a lock sitting flush to the surface of a door with the locking elements moving horizontally...but...I am searching for a "restored lock" in situ..
