  1. So, does nobody know? Or is such common knowledge that nobody wishes to waste the time to answer. Oh well.
  2. Thanks. I'll download it this weekend
  3. How long were new Roman recruits trained before they actually started fighting? And, what did their training consist of? I was just wondering. Thanks
  4. I have RTW and I love it, but I am considering downloading RTR. I know it is more historically accurate, but is it any more fun to play?
  5. Did the triarii ever drop their spear and use a gladius?
  6. I don't know about this but I was once thinking that could possible the invention of stirrups lead to Rome's fall? After stirrups were invented, then armies would begin to lean more heavily on cavalry, and the Romans still were not that good at it. Then, more cavalry based barbarian armies would have an advantage over Roman cavalry and thus a larger advantage in battle. Is this theory possible? Or do I just not know what I am talking about?
  7. But, the spear armed hoplite could carry a larger shield than the phalangites
  8. I was just thinking about this idea. What if a military reformer did this. First of all, the advatages of the legion and phalanx have been talked about enough here. So what if one was to combine the advantages and have units with a roman scutum shield, a gladius, and a hoplite spear (whatever they were called). Units would be organized into smaller units, similar to cohorts. Men would be in a phalanx formation, and units could link to form a solid line. Then, if flexibility was needed, they could drop their spear, draw their sword, and they are basically like the roman legions without pila. Also, they could form a testudo with spears sticking out, like a porcipine. It would be great against cavalry. So, what do you think about this idea? Is it good, or just a pathetic attempt at trying to combine 2 different unit types and would never work?
  9. So, is the enemy army on the other side of the nile? The Nile is a big river, and would be difficult to cross. If they had to cross to get to me, I would probably fortify my positions with palisades and what not. Then their spearmen would have trouble attacking over a small wall. If they did not have to cross the nile, or were already on my side, I would try to use the flexibilty of my troops to outmanuever the eygptian phalanx.
  10. Are the spearmen in a phalanx? What is the terrain like? How experienced are your troops? How loyal are they?
  11. I would probably allow my army to be surrounded. Then, no matter where my reinforcements attack, they will be attacking a rear. They could cut through the germans and rescue the 20,000. Then I would counter attack and destroy the germans.
  12. Hi, I'm new here. Let's try another scenario. It is a couple years after the defeat of Hannibal and are commanding 2 legions, 1 is made up of veterans from the punic war and the other is made up of raw recruits. You are in Macedonia, as the Macedonians had helped Carthage, and you are chasing the macedonian army. Finally you have drawn them to battle, but the outnumber you 2 to 1. They have set up on a hill with a heavy forest to your left, and a light one to the right. The hill is covered with grass. It is about mid-day. You have been trying to get them to battle, and now they are ready. they cavalry outnumbers yours 3 to 1. What will you do? Have fun
