  1. What kind of shield did centurions use, or did they have a shield at all? I could see that they wore the gladius on the left because there was no scutum to get in the way, so were they just unprotected?
  2. I don't think it sad. Though Rome Total War is unhistorical in many, many ways (thats why I recomend R:TR), it is still a fun game. Ofcourse, it shouldn't get in the way of schoolwork.
  3. And, Victory is "victoria," in the nominative case.
  4. While reading some of the Roma Sub Rosa series books, which are fiction and therefore could be incorrect, Roman citizens had a special citizen ring that they wore. Is this correct?
  5. I think what he meant was that now he knows about Roman history, he is embarressed that it was the book Emperor the Gates of Rome or whatever that started his interest. I assume that this book was unhistorical, but I don't know because I have never read it.
  6. I also noticed he would start to lay seige to some little town, then the defenders would sally out, kill a few of his men, and Hannibal would just leave. Almost like he thought beseiging a city was a waste of time. Ofcourse, spending 16 or so years roaming around the Italian peninsula is also a waste of time.
  7. While reading The War with Hannibal books XXI-XXX of Titus Livy's History of Rome, I realized how poor the Carthagians were at besieging cities. It seemed like the only way Hannibal could get in was betrayal of the city. No wonder he didn't march on Rome after Cannae. He didn't have a chance of taking it, at least by assault.
  8. During the battle, did the centurions sometimes have to make decisions without getting orders from the general? Orders probably took time to send and recieve, and since battle is a lot about timing, the centurions probably made minor decisions. I think that just makes sense.
  9. Right, but they are essentially cannon-fodder. They cannot fight as well as the good soldiers so you're wasting bodies... which would then need to be filled again, and with recruitment so bad you NEED to take thumbless soldiers I think you would hinder yourself more in the long run then helping in the short run. Besides, you can say it's a "cusiher job" but they could also be doing all the manual labor. Built the camps, repair walls etc, while the good soldiers avoid it, also, you need those good soldiers up front so besides manual labor, logistics is the only logical place I can see for the thumbless ones to be placed while actually getting some good work out of them. Was recruitment really so bad that they NEEDED thumbless soldiers, or was drafting them more as of a lesson for others, that cutting off your thumb is dumb because you still go to war. Drafting them would certainly send a message to others.
  10. I don't think he mentions the equestrian class, but was talking just about the Senators. I'm not sure, but I thought that during the rein of Tiberius and Caligula, the Senate pretty much lost all of it's power, and by the time Claudius started ruling, there were almost none of the same Senators that had been around during Augustus. They all got banished, poisoned, or accused of false charges and executed, (Well, I imagine that not all charges were false) or died of all age. The senate just kind of became a figure, with no true power.
  11. Now, I was just thinking about it the other day, and would a better translation be Ad Victoriam, et praeter, because "ad" requires an accusative? Also, perhaps ultra would be a better word. Maybe, "ad victoriam, et ultra" Or, "Ad victoriam ultraque" or something like that. Could anyone help, please?
  12. I saw this same program, quite a while ago. It's possible the formation worked because the Iceni, being barbarians with low disipline, couldn't hold their ground and instead get caught inside the V. Then, they would be sorrounded on three sides and would get cut down. It obviously worked extremely well for this battle, as the greatly outnumbered Romans gained a major victory and slaughtered nearly all of the enemy as the ran because of their baggage and women folk. Why they didn't use this at more battles, I don't know.
  13. Great job Kosmo. Catholic means universal, and Orthodox means straight line in Greek. The Catholics do the sign of the cross from top-bottom-right-left. The Orthodox do it top-bottom-left-right. The Orthodox church is extremely Conservative and never change their ways. The Catholics are more seceptible to change. are u sure its right to left for catholics because i've always done it the other way same as ever catholic i know....or maybe im jsut confused LOL Yes, I believe it is the other way, left to right, because that is the way I, and everybody I know, and our priest, do it. Top-bottom-left-right.
  14. I really don't know why I personally like Rome. My dad likes Roman history, and I guess he just sort of passed it on to me.
  15. An "elephant-riding battalion across the Alps"? Not an army? Hah. That makes me laugh.
  16. Does anyone else think it would be hard to carry a heavy shield with one arm all day? No matter what the grip, you would get awfully tired. Also, I can see how one may deliver a blow with the boss if holding the shield with a horizontal grip. It's like punching.
  17. I think I would probably get tired holding the shield with one arm, no matter how I hold it. 20lbs on one arm while fighting would be very difficult.
  18. In the RTR mod, instead of 3 families and the senate, there is only 1 Roman faction. So, you don't get a chance to destroy fellow Romans, but it's much more realistic. I love RTR. Also, I believe RTR 6.0 runs on the 1.2 patch, though I'm not completely sure.
  19. I've been wondering, the scutum has a handle in the center, behind the boss, correct? So how does one hold it effectivily and not get tired during the fighting? S=strap H=handle .....=space ----------- |............| |............| |............| |.....H.....| |............| |............| |............| ----------- I just visualize a much more practical sheild with a strap on one side for the forearm, and a handle on the other, like this- ----------- |............| |............| |............| |.S......H.| |............| |............| |............| ----------- So what are other people's thoughts?
  20. One figure that many people often don't think about is Horatius. During the early republic, after throwing out the King, Lars Porsena attacked Rome with a huge Etruscan army. Their was a wooden bridge into the city, which had to be destroyed, but the enemy were already their. Horatius and two others defended the bridge against the entire army, while the bridge was destroyed. Right before the bridge fell, Horatius ordered the two others to cross, while he alone stood up to the entire army. After the bridge was gone, he jumped into the Tiber and swam back to safety with all of his armor. Therefore, one man saved the city of Rome. He was a true Roman.
  21. I know very little Latin, but managed to get 10 out of 10. Usually I knew just one of the words, our what one of the endings meant, and made an educated guess.
  22. Here a link to a good web page on Latrunculi Roman Board games
  23. Then what should I use instead of "praeter"?
  24. Hi, I was just wondering, how would you translate To victory, and beyond? I have it in my signature, but I am not sure if it is correct. Thank you
