  1. It sounds too tame for me. I'd like to see the ruins though.
  2. I thought that the programme was very interesting and I certainly learnt some new stuff, such as that the Romans actually went into Wales. Previously I thought that they went just past Chester and stopped but to find that they had a line of forts right across South Wales was amazing. Also I never thought that they went further than the Antonine Wall. What a surprise that was. But you are right about the theory of an earlier invasion. But I was wondering if the Romans knew of the good agricultural land and the mines, then surely someone had had to visit previously to find these things out! Well done Time Team and I can't wait for tonights programme.
  3. Thanks, very interesting but I obviously did not make myself clear enough. I would like to find out where the names of the items originated from or were written down and where they were first discovered.
  4. I have just realised that I posted this in the wrong topic instead of posting it here. I am trying to make up written accompaniments to use during our public displays. I am trying to trace the origins of the names of the armour used by legionnaries. Can anyone enlighten me as to where the armour was originally found and why is it called what we know it as? Thankyou
  5. I am trying to make up some displays of Roman armour and equipment for use during our public displays, I have looked through all the books that I have but to no avail. Does anyone know where the names of the current armour originate from or are they named after the discoverers? Can anyone enlighten me. Please.
  6. My results were that I am an INTERPERSONAL THINKER and my ideal career would be a politician. Oh I wish I could!!!
  7. I am 33 years old with 3 children married to a Roman enthusiast/amateur archaeologist. We are currently running our local Roman history group with big ideas for the future if we could get some serious money together.
  8. Our main purpose is to make people aware of the Roman History through going into local schools and educating the children. We also particpate at local fetes and fairs dressed up in authentic looking Roman gear and again showing how the Romans used to live etc. I have known groups to fight in replica battles with the Celtic groups but we personally have not done this yet.
  9. Yes it is very interesting, does anyone else have any information on this subject that they would like to share with us. Oh by the way, Len Morgan is very informative and he is one of the people that gave me my original information!!!
  10. I suppose it depends on where you are going to dig and what you are hoping to find. If I were taking part in the big dig, I would dig in my local area simply because my home town is surrounded by at least 3 or 4 Roman sites also a major Roman Road runs through the main street in the town. So I would be very interested in taking part and to see if I could locate a site that would link my street to the Roman sites around us.
  11. I totally agree with what you are saying, and it is my belief that this still goes on today, regarding several different religions. And hooray for those Roman ladies who stood up the domineering male species, if only more women would stand up to them today, the whole world might change.
  12. Question to Primus Pilus, based on all the evidence that you have seen, what is your personal view on the tunic colours and how do you come to that conclusion.
  13. And what is wrong with popularising Roman history. Isn't this what we all want really. If more people took an interest in Roman History, then maybe, more facts might be known and therefore more understanding of the real Roman world as we know it. Also, us re-enactors might get more work as a big result of this.
  14. OK guys, I am not as much as an expert as you, but I was told by an archaeologist that a Roman tunic could be any colour as long as it was earthy tones.
  15. From what I know, the legionnaries wore red tunics during battle to disguise blood stains and white tunics during parade duties. Not sure where they got blue and green from.
  16. Hooray!!! Somebody has unearthed this shattering truth at long last. Would you be posted on Hadrians Wall in mid-winter with no socks on?!!!
  17. I recently held a school talk in a local primary school about the Roman Military, when one child popped up with the following question: " What did the Romans do with dead bodies of the enemy that they killed?" Anyone got any ideas.
  18. Have you tried Wessex Archaeology who may have publications about Bath? They are a nice bunch and very helpful. Remember Phil Harding aka Time Team he works for Wessex Archaeology!!!
  19. Check out the Roman Military Research Society. Their weapons are hand made and can be made to order. Their website is www.rmrs.co.uk. We regularly purchase items from them and they are good quality. Or check out Depeeka. They are cheap but not quite as authentic. Alternatively try googling under Roman Reenactors Suppliers.
  20. I have a few examples for sale. They include a mortaria, and 3 other examples. Please e-mail me for further details.
  21. Thankyou for the brilliant pics. Because I have had trouble signing in to the website, could you possibly get hold of an e-mail address so that I can contact the maker and get hold of some.
  22. I would love to go to Rome obviously and I would love to travel the length and breadth of England to visit all the Roman sites.
  23. This is in reference to the IRA a terrorist group in Ireland. They are supposedly fighting for the freedom from British rule.
  24. OK so why does the Legio II Augusta use the capricorn on their particular shield pattern. I think that each legion uses an emblem to represent their particular legion and this would be highly visible when fighting battles where several legions were participating.
  25. We are striving to make it as authentic as possible. Although using sheet metal is possible what is impossible is to actually bend it to the right shape and angles required. I know that you can buy the discs but I don't know where and how much they will cost. I have looked on the internet but to no avail so I thought that one or two of you might know. I have tried to register with some other forums but for some reason I have been blocked so this is my only chance.
