Where did you get this map?
I had it stashed away in my Edinburgh Fringe files.Cant remember where I dug it out from , I suspect to be an Edinburgh Tourist Board standard issue.
-
Is the Gallery itself worth visiting?
yes, this is a major gallery.Ditto the Museum of Scotland.

You know in my Scripture Survey class(required religious class for school), my teacher told us that myrrh represented Jesus' humanity, for obvious reason why. Gold represented his King of the Jews specialness(you know what I mean) and incense represented divine aspect of his life.
Thanks for the picture, I never knew what the thing looked like.
Frankincense is a neglected medicine-burning the grains of gum gives off a deeply cleansing (but soporific) smoke-if you have a very bad head cold or respiratory infection it allows of a great freedom to breathe . Pliny cites it as an antidote to hemlock ( as a plant medicine).

who do we have here?
-
LoL, having a damn good time it seems...
A particular type of belly-dance/martial art ! It didnt affect my lunch badly.
-
the habit of growth is not that unusual but the range of Commiphora is strictly within N E Africa and Arabia (C mukul is Indian)
Myrrh ,Benzoin and Frankincensce are "the usual suspects" for incensce.

We have lambs ears all over the place here. My mom is allergic to them somehow...
well -if shes wounded in a phalanx attack use the leaf to bind her wounds-just dont let her sniff the pollen
-
Hmm...is that a relative of "lambs ear"? (common in america, large, fuzzy leaves, the "male" or "rooster" plant grows tall and skinny and it gets...purple flowers I believe)
yes exactly right- very beautiful when in flower. There was a male plant from the previous year next to this , probably about 4 feet tall.
and-for Lost Warrior-this the point from where I photographed the waterfalls you liked so much-these were at my feet.
-
As a side note...do you know what they were used for?
a substantial number ( on the right) are probes of various types-you can see different shape variations and angles , if we are looking at combat wounds we need to get bone shards out and any foreign bodies. We see to the left cutting implements for incisions, at the base a saw , the round disc is employed in trephanation ( getting into a damaged skull-to relieve pressure, retrieve bone shards and pull back impacted skull fragments. There are tweezers in a pocket on the mid left .The hammer is likely to be for trephanation as well.
This is not strictly my speciality, more where my speciality meets direct intervention, so forgive any errors.
Cruse has some nice illustrations in Roman Medicine.

Very nice suit!
You cant wear anything heavy in downtown Tokyo in August, very humid ( I felt)
-
Now Pertinax, please show your true self instead of tempting us with paintings that my resemble yourself.
Ok -I posted Pertinax in the Orient, I only put these pictures of Erasmus and More up because we seem to share nasal charachteristics, and longish faces.
-
I cant look at this earnest and sober Gentlemans portrait now without thinking-" Sir Bedevere this new learning amazes me! Tell me again how sheep's bladders may be used to prevent earthquakes?"
-
Yes, as depicted More does seem to be quite a bit more ollifactorily endowed...
and also has a hint of Monty Python's Mr Jones about him..
-
Erasmus or More?
Erasmus!

Beautiful! Where is it? Is it a limestone quarry?
This is Shap cement works, the train has just reached the summit of its long run uphill from Oxenholme moving toward Penrith and Carlisle ( speed of about 100mph) So this is the modern County of Cumbria, otherwise more Brigantian territory in Roman times. . Many American visitors pass this way travelling from London to Edinburgh via Carlisle. I love this view-I try to photograph it in all weathers and any time of day-its striking for being in the middle of huge swathes of beautiful ,wild country.

I said so in the forum , but it bears repeating here , nice work.

I see that there were oppidums beyong Hadrian's Wall, were they uninhabited after the pulling back from the Antonine Wall?
I doubt it,I suggest a change of overlordship , the area was never heavily populated-indeed in later history this was a one of the deadliest places to live in Europe-(the Debatable Lands), home of the Reivers and Moss Troopers, but thats another story. Population density was quite low in the Roman era and oddly this is the very area dealt with in "Eagle of the Ninth". Osprey have an excellent fortress sieres book on this area that I reviewed ,briefly , in a colosseum thread.Rome very nearly conquered the whole of the island but the rhetorical question would be -what for? Certainly Britain was seen as the place to test ones resolution and strength but the tin and copper mines were already under control .

and very weirdly , for the first time in 12 years , I was asked today for some Rue. Why it was required for a sore plantar ligament I do not know. The person seemed unimpressed by my discourse on the prevention of intimate congress.

An quite an impressive tidal range as well I see
Well spotted -but then the eye of the Oanii is from the sea! The range is huge, I will demonstrate by finding a shot showing a full harbour with boats afloat , whereas at low tide the Mite is fordable wearing boots, and the other Rivers dwindle very low..

this looks quite Pict...orial, if you get my drift.Wouldnt look odd painted on a passing charioteer.

no definitley not-so what have they got hold of here? something bull seal/walrus like? Manatees dont turn up in Rome do they? A giant turtle ?
The 'hands, fingers & nails' bit is seriously throwing me off...
The hair didnt make me too comfortable either...

is this Triton?
The reference said it was Poseidon himself. Incidentaly here is a very interesting anecdote by Pausanias about the appearance of Triton:
"I saw another Triton among the curiosities at Rome, less in size than the one at Tanagra. The Tritons have the following appearance. On their heads they grow hair like that of marsh frogs not only in color, but also in the impossibility of separating one hair from another. The rest of their body is rough with fine scales just as is the shark. Under their ears they have gills and a man's nose; but the mouth is broader and the teeth are those of a beast. Their eyes seem to me blue, and they have hands, fingers, and nails like the shells of the murex. Under the breast and belly is a tail like a dolphin's instead of feet." - 9.21
Obviously, he's not talking about a statue?!?

its unfair to pick favourites from amongst these items .but this is splendid.

I just wish to say that this is perhaps , easily , the ugliest photo I have posted ( by a mile) and I cant believe how many people have viewed it!
