  1. But, Thermopylae was not about tactics when it came down to the battle, the romans trained hard and some became veterans of loads of battles. When the spartans used their phalanx, the romans could have made their own shield wall and defended like that. Before Scipio Rome had very few tacticians on the battlefield yet they were not a pushover then. It probably comes down to the phalanx in a tight area.

So the general consensus is that the romans would haev been less effective than the spartans?

  2. VTC, in Anagram World your younger brother isn't related to you at all, but has a Roman identity which shows that he's a member of the Horatii -- an ancient patrician family whose most notable member was probably that legendary Horatius who bravely held a bridge against an onslaught of attacking enemies.

The cognomen of your brother (who isn't your brother in Anagram World) is "Mento," indicating that a physical peculiarity of his ancestors was a long chin. His praenomen is "Publius," abbreviated as "P."

    His full Roman name is:

    P. Horatius Mento

    = atonrhmoewspte -ew +iu

    -- Nephele

Come on, this might be your 600th post. My bro says thank you

  3. No, sorry

Ok maybe it's harder than I expected.

Another clue, Augustus changed its name

    vtc

    Torino (Turin)?

    (Augusta Taurinorum)

    Nope

To be precise, Terentius Varro renamed it after Augustus

It's within 160km/100miles of Turin though

  4. Ok here is a jovial and funny shakespeare adaptation

    please comment.

    All the world's a book.

And all the men and women merely words

They have their full stops and question marks

And one author in their time writes many stories

Their writings being Seven Ages of themself. First the Child

Scribbling and Scrawling and Scratching on walls

The the colouring Schoolboy with is crayon

And over the edge of the colouring books. Chewing the end of his pencil

Unwilling to write 'A,B,C'. And then the amateur writer

    Scribling down, Scrawling down words

Made to Paper's lines. The the true Writer

    Full of enthusiasm and exuberance

Full of glee, as publishers grant his first book

    Seeking to enlighten the world

With the new book. And then the Talent

In fair excellent writing with success

With money pouring in, and reputation high

Full of wise words and deft description

And so he writes his ways. The Sixth Age shifts

From writer to reader and acclaimed writer but no longer writing

With spectacles on nose and book in hand

Their books are still famous but they read the contempory books

For them these are the new versions of tehir now classics

Turning again to amateur writer of the past

And is now a classic. Last Age of all

That ends this eventful, joyous history

Is to be a writer and mere oblivion to other media

Sans unique, sans new, sans different, sans author

  5. Are you sure roman wargamer,

    when it come to the right or proper name of the weapon;

to be honest, i am not 100% sure because i can not read neither Greek or Latin.

i learn my ancient history subject via the English books and translation.

most of my reply was base on my long years of research and in-depth workguess.

i swear the pila are throwing spears and the hasta is the lunging spear of the triarii

your concept of pila could be what most people called or normally known as the pilum.

hasta is a long thrusting spear weapon of the hastati. that is my stand.

but as the army evolved the spears [of the hastatus] were to immobile and not very maneouvrable...

the hasta [become] the lunging spear of the triarii

if the hasta could cause immobility and not very maneouverable.

then why not ask the question? why a bad weapon spear hasta become a triarii weapon?

why the end defense line; the most veteran use it for their "[hasta] the lunging spear."? [of the triarii]

pila is the spear of the triarii. was my formal stand.

i hope it clears sone question.

Roman have [different] name for every weapon they use.

    You win, sorry.

  6. All right folks, wiki says that only slaves and prisoners of war and once upon a time children were sacrificed so i doubt this would happen, especially when any wound on the hand would hinder a soldier. However self-harm is different, if this was a painful but necessary way of trying to release some pent up emotion to the gods.

    Any thoughts?

  7. The early Roman's probably were greatly influenced by the already booming and settled culture of the carthaginians/phoenicians they already had a senate by the times the kings were stripped of their power.

And theri is the semi-legend thing about Aeneas and Dido. Aeneas supposedly helped found Rome and Dido was his wife, she helped found Carthage.

  8. BTW, your Maths is inherently biased because there were simply too few years of Civil War (no more than 20) against the total lifetime of the Roman Republic (some 482 years).

I agree foreign conquers tend to have a destabilizing effect over the conqueror's internal affairs; it's amazing the Roman Senate was able to prevent civil war for more than a Century after the II Punic war. I think the turning point was the so called "Marian" reforms.

let's not forget that as ASCLEPIADES says that there were only 20 years, in which the whole of the Roman conquered lands turned on each other, most of the time it was just two senatorial factions eg Marius v Sulla and Caesar v Pompey

  9. He could always just use his sword. Being poked in the back with a sword would achieve roughly the same effect as being hit with a staff although I'm not sure that effect in either case would be beneficial

Its more likely the errant soldier would get a shove from the optio's hand "GET BACK IN LINE LEGIONARY!"

    Indeed.

Are you sure roman wargamer, i swear the pila are throwing spears and the hasta is the lunging spear of the triarii and the hastatus got their name because originally they had the hasta as the youngest usually had the spears but as the army evolved the spears were to immobile and not very maneouvrable.

Can anyone back me up, or am i speaking rubbish.

If by any chance i am wrong i apologise for doubting you roman wargamer.

  10. I've seen these too, and wanted to have one. I haven't gotten one yet though. I haven't seen many actual sources for these rings; but I haven't looked very hard either. I do know there are a lot of "historical fakes" floating around Ebay.

Sometimes it is just nice to believe they are real. If you really really want a historically accurate ring and aren't sure if it is fake or not, e-mail the person you wish to buy it off to take a photo of a verification document which they should have if it has been checked by a professional.

If you aren't that bothered, try and find the most accurate looking one :)

  11. I agree. Apparently, what the Res Publica had after the Big Man's death was some kind of balance, which was going to last for more than a generation, even if not unchallenged.

Was all of this planned by Sulla & Co.?

Or was it a fortuitous development after his unexpected demise?

    What do you think?

I think this was more of your second response. It was the calm after the storm. Like the swell of power was now being restored. Nothing drastic.

  12. As a self-taught writer who has now published fourteen historical novels set in Rome -- with a TV series based on them -- I suggest you concentrate on plot structure and writing style. Prose is very different from poetry. When you've written something and you feel it's as good as you can make it, don't show it to friends. Send it to something like The Writers Group. You have to pay but they will professionally appraise your work in positive and constructive ways.

To find their URL and to see my own tips on How to Get Published, go HERE.

It's not easy to get published, but being a writer is the best job in the world.

    Good luck!

    Flavia

Actually, as you can probably tell, i am a writer first and poet second. That's why i published the poem and not a narrative or descriptive extract.

I'm going to check your url now se whats about

  13. OK - I take it this is a person who has passed on 'speaking' to a person they left behind - at least that's how it reads to me. You said it was one of your first efforts, Vibs, so you may well have spotted by now that it is quite derivative.

To be honest it was my first effort I was appraised for, the rest before this were for school.

I can hear Stevie Smith in there - and even, Gods forbid - Patience Strong!

    Who are they?

But there is some nice assonance going on, even if the metre is a little 'clunky'. The only thing that really jarred with me was your third line 'You stole my heart and held my tongue' ???

I have trouble reading it myself, i think as you said it is 'clunky' but it makes the thing not run so smooth and fairy, I originally wrote this after as you guessed someone passed away and it was to happy when it ran so smooth.

I completely agree with the 'safety' factor. This is a comfort poem and safe seemed great at the time.

Do we have an answering poem from the one left behind? That would be an interesting exercise - then a reader could contrast the viewpoints.

I never even thought of that. I might try and sneek it in during hte time i write ny larger book.

  14. Once again I don't know if this should go in here or somewhere else (eg the After Hours Bath forum or a Blog)

I once again congratulate the site and it's fantastic members for their contributions to many of my new topics. You lot are a great help.

As I believe I have said previously, I joined this site to further my knowledge and to develop a greater historical well of information for me. However, my main reason is research for a work of mine (novel) coming up. So as to see if i can write after all, I wish to 'publish' a few of my poems on the site. Most have no relevance to Rome and are simple things I write for schools.

Well, please give me loads of feedback, for this particular one probably critical bad feedback.

Thank you , well here goes. This one was one of my first and worst, I never gave a title to so have been calling it untitled, however if you think of a good name please post it:

    Untitled

I have left, I have gone and flown

I have not left, not left you alone

You stole my heart and held my tongue

My time has passed my time is done

One day I'll come and set you free

Don't wait, wait for an eternity

Don't forget me, but still move ahead

Don't linger nor ponder about the dead

I'm there in your blood and tears

Still in your flood and fears

I know you want time to end

Because you - like me - have lost your friend

I'm there in your heart today and tomorrow

    Don't be consumed by sorrow

They let me in through the door

Don't look towards the loveless shore

    I know you're a part of me

And only you will set me free

    For eternity

  15. Merely a nova I'm afraid. The star coughs and throws off waste material from the surface, resulting in a bright flare. Such things are rare enough, but supernova (The complete destruction of a star) is incredibly rare - I did read of one expert who reckoned there's been three during the life of our galaxy. In any case, an observable supernova had better be a long way off because the explosion has dire consequences for nearby star systems.

I actually think I saw a nova a couple of weeks ago...the star was very distant but it was flashing, not just twinkling, but flashing. I'd been watching this same star for a couple of nights. It went very dim, then a spike of light coming up and down from the star and then...nothing. I checked the night after that and the star was not there...

On a related note, there is a lunar eclipse tonight!

    Wow.

I did a little research on wiki about this and you seem to have really seen one by what you describe or you saw a sateleitte braking up on re-entry

    luck bod

Or shout at him, i suppose they were meant to be scary people who could 'potentially' bash you with their staff or sword or they could just give you a prod  as hilariously demonstrated in this emoticon.
