  1. I thouhgt this hould go here.

Why would he say such a thing, this isn't a book or a film, why would such a quote be saud throughout history if not to be simplified. Such a metaphor as he is suggesting is that all that he is about to do is but chance.

    Mecredi - day of Mercury

    Jeudi - day of Jupiter

    Vendredi - day of Venus

Samedi - day of the sabbath

    Di manche - Lords day

  3. I've been doing some reading and research lately on the Carolingian Empire, presently focusing on the Reign of Charlesmagne. From what I gather Charles The Great likely saw himself and his people as the inheritors of the Western Roman Empire. Any thoughts? Or any other candidates as inheritors?

    Cheers

    Alex

probably considering he got crowned western roman emperor.. but then again most barbarian kingdoms thought of themselves as successors.. probably the most important candidate is the eastern Roman Empire

Someone living this side of the blue. hey.

True he may be the most important but the true successor would have to have came from either the emperors bloodline or one of his advisors. Just an opinion.

  4. There was also a game where two men faced each other and had to guess how many fingers the other man had outstretched.

I found another game much like this. Two people both put out their hands - with their choice of fingers outstretched - at the same time and while they're doing this shout a number between 1 and 10. Seems simple but many seemed it a deft game of skill and tactics because if you don't use any fingers, your guess is between 0 and 5 but this is an obvious tactic so your oppenent may also use it, so your guess is 0 but then they may guess 5 because they predict you will want to send out 5 outstretched fingers etc.

    Really try this out!

I think is just a claim, like the spartans thought they were rightful heirs to Greece and were descendants of Achilles. Yet due to social rank and time, it could be a just claim. meh?

  6. You notice something weird about that photo? Not only does the priest not have any legs, he's floating in mid air!

Are we sure that's a priest, and not a lemur?

    BBWWAAAAAAHHH :(

    Relevance! :)

Anyway, I would also love to know what that is all about and if it existed. I would have thought people would have stolen the objects placed inside, even if they were not worth anything. Just a thought.

a priest is shown updating a fasti at the beginning of each episode to indicate the amount of time that has lapsed since the previous episode.

Well i never interpreted it as that. Did anyone else cotton onto it. Or am i just inattentive :D sounds like me.

hopefully someone will enlighten me, Nephele and Cassius Loginus

  7. I have decided that this is probably the best place for this whim.

I was watching 300 - fantastic film, great interpretation of history, yet so off accuracy it is no longer worth worrying - and A flash of brilliance hit me when the 300 created their shield wall.

What if 300 core men from Roman times (eg. Caesars tenth or 300 from Scipios or an imperial legion) were put in the same place, same time in actual history.

What do you people think? would they have defeated more men? or would they not have survived at all?

    :(

  8. Define bad?

who's opinion is it anyway on what is bad.

I suppose in their own eyes both Cato and Caesar thought what they were doing was right but law at the time says that Caesar broke it. Yet as M. Porcius Cato and Primus Pilus gives evidence for Caesar is depicted as duh good guy. I think it would be impossible to know becasuse for opinions sake, it is your choice based on all the factual evidence (not opinions (hard to come by but y'know)).

  9. The greatest tribute you have already given.

    Your love.

Something every Roman is proud of.

This may sound odd but why don't you suggest to (or give to) your children (for theirs if applies in the future).

    Or the bust idea.

Crisis overted, I worked out why i see it so. You don't even need to visit my profile to see it.

Because i blab a bit about where i currently live, it shifts evrything over.

Causing the smush, if you do it to your own account you'll see.

    Thanks for all the help.

  11. Did the standard used by the signifier double up as a weapon?

Good lord no. It was a religious symbol, a display of the legions spirit. No signifer was going to break that in combat! But then... if you're carrying one and no other weapon to hand.... Soldiers are practical people.

If Caesars troops gave ground he would often rally them in person, catching individual fugitives by the throat and forcing them round to face the enemy; even if they were panic stricken - as when one standard bearer threatened him with the sharp butt of his eagle and another, whom he tried to detain, who ran off leaving the eagle in his hand

    Life of Caesar - Suetonius

Wow, revelling! If the butt of the standard was sharp that implies it definitely could double up as a weapon, however i am now going to guess that they didn't train with them or want to use them because they were a religous symbol.

  12. Fantastic list ASCLEPIADES, no World War battles though, I would have put D-day or Dunkerque. Arminius is a surprise, i would think Trasimene or Trebia is a more world changing battle. Nothing from the crusades. Otherwise great!

    Salve, VTC.

That's because this list comes from 1851, 63 years before the beginning of WWI and 88 years before WWII.

Oh yeah, maybe you should start a new topic on this.
