  1. Strangely enough my favourite Roman victories are generally those won against other Romans. Constantine's victory against Maxentius(?), or Octavian's victory at Actium (I suppose this could be considered a victory against Egypt in a way). For victories against non-Roman forces, I would go for Trajan (I think it was the Dacians).
  2. I think death of a thousand cuts was invented in China, but it does aound very Caligulaesque.
  3. Aye, I also have that fear, but I have a couple of years on you yet Happy birthday.
  4. Vercengetorix hoped Caesar would enslave the women and children. The only other option would be "the old way", i.e the inhabitants eat the old and lame (according to one source I've seen).
  5. It may be the first pic they've found, but I'm quite sure historians knew about gladiators wearing gstrings.
  6. That's how they did Vercengetorix I believe.
  7. I found this handy guide to Britain, ideal for anyone planning a visit in the near future. http://www.brookview.karoo.net/BFA/
  8. They did not go into detail, except to say that the guy had only 1 leg. The guilotine is a strange form of execution to my thinking. I think it would be almost as disturbing for the audience as it would for the condemned. I can think of worse ways to die, but not many worse things to see.
  9. A couple o questions- -What is wrong with the legion forum? (is it the hypothetical "who would win" threads that often appear?) -Why did Spartacus get banned? (I assume it was general trolling, but what specifically pushed it over the edge?) p.s, can I be a citizen please? I have served my time on the wall.
  10. If you stayed in on Friday night and watched QI, you may have seen this. One of the questions was of the last recorded use of the guilotine in France. To my suprise, it was 1977! Government sanctioned be-heading in Western Europe just a few years before I was born . As I say, I'm suprised, that is all.
  11. England expects that every man shall do his duty. By the time of his death in 1805, Nelson had been shot in the head, lost an arm, and an eye. His death, at the moment of his greatest victory, won him redemption, and elevation to the pinnacle of military glory. TO NELSON, AND VICTORY!
  12. I'm not massively in the know about most things, but since no-one has replied I'll tell you what I know. He was an Eastern Emperor, reviled for his fondness for feminine attire, as well as other vices and perversions. He was stabbed by one of his guards, and after being dragged through the streets, his corpse was dumped in a river. He held power shortly after Marcus Aurellius, and slightly before Pertinax. I'll do some reading to check my facts and get more info.
  13. I always thought that one of Nero's favourite punishments was quite nasty. The offender's penis would be wound with wire, and he would then have to drink water until he died (presumably from a burst bladder).
  14. I'd be an Emperor. I'd innitiate building works of greater grandure any previous Emperor. The main statue of my divine personage would be 100m tall and covered in gold.
  15. Braveheart is a cracking film, if a bit innaccurate.
  16. score---avg points----avg kms off ----- avg time 3994------399.4 -------- 756.0 ----- 2.7 My best score, had about 5 attempts.
  17. It's a West Highland Terrier. I think they were bred in Scotland, so she is genuine Celtic
  18. This is my (parents) Celtic warhound, called Sally.
  19. Murmillo or secutor. I like the armour, esp the helmets and shields.
  20. This is a picture of the British Empire. I would say it's a similar size to the soviet union. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2...Empire_1897.jpg The Soviet Union was apparently 22,402,200 km
  21. I know he's not officially recognised at UNRV, but I always had great respect for Justinian (the way he re-captured many parts of the Empire, including Rome, and managed to reconstitute much Roman law, amongst many other things). My question is, could he have succeeded in re-uniting East and West, had he been less unlucky? (With the plague, earthquake etc).
  22. This came up on a general chat forum that I frequent. The guy who asked it didn't seem to think they did all that much, I would like to prove him wrong, but I can't come up with many specific examples. Some things written by other people - -Sewerage system, schooling, aquaducts I thought - -Hadrians wall, protecting the tribes from marauding Scots -Effective coinage/currency (not too sure what currency was like in pre-Roman Britain) -Better farming (irrigation etc) -Military reform? (Probably not, I think the British tribes didn't learn all that much) -Public hygene (again though, I'm not to sure what the standards were in Btittania) Any help much appreciated.
