  1. ah well i was mistaken but then again that is wikipedia.
  2. i always thought Pilate was spanish... i read that from somewhere but i dont remember where..
  3. i highly doubt that any troops couldve been spared for the defense of Selymbria if there was a defence.. i havent read anything on a siege of the city but i highly doubt the inhabitants wouldve even seen a point in defending the town/city there is no way it coudlve been held again the armies of the ottomans. i think the ottomans offered a sieged city either a surrender where they could keep possesions and not be harmed or if they decided to defend the city there would be no quarter given. usually the general would allow his men 3 or 5 days pillage and rape of the city. about the child soldier things thats true too, the famous ' Janissaries' where christian children who where trained in taught to be fanatical muslim warriors. edit: spelling.
  4. Galata was mainly in control by the Genoans by the time of the fall. I dont think Galata was that important. yes it held the massive chain that blocked the golden horn to foreign navies but thats mainly all.
  5. oopsie i always thought it was near the hellespont LOL! oh well... um...BUT STILL
  6. Rumeli Hissar was a fortress built around the hellespont by Mehmet II it was built to control the shipping through the straits of marmara..it ended up starving Constantinople from any aid it could get from the west eg food, reinforcements.. and most importantly its trade.
  7. goodpoint about the persians but also it coudlve prolonged the empire a bit longer because it woudlve prevented the building of rumeli hissar..
  8. i remember reading that Constantine actually considered rebuilding 'Troy' and his new capital around the hellespont. Do you think it wouldve been a better position then the greek settlement of Byzantium?? militarily speaking if he did choose the hellespont would it have been a better defensive position or worse??
  9. "control"?? i always thought the crimean area was a vassal to Rome or more like a satellite state??
  10. um not to be annoying but what was the point of quoting that post...??
  11. LOL!!! how embarassed would you be
  12. But..But.. thats Barbaric! lol Seriously it is hard for me to comprehend crimes against culture and art such as that. Even and maybe especially at that time it had to be apparent that Rome was something unique in human history. The ruling classes of these nations at least would have to be aware of that. Your surely right of course though, what a tragedy. If we assign ourselves to the Terry Jones school of thought, we'd believe that the Romans would have done the same to a Vandal city. Rome had already massacred large chunks of the Vandal population during their migration across mainland Europe; 455 AD was just a way of repaying the atrocities. Still, if it were up to me Rome would still be around in her ancient glory. When did Rome 'massacre' large chunks of the Vandal population??
  13. I believe your talking about Irene, the mother of Constantine Copronymous
  14. I dont think they fought eachother to prove they were the 'real' Roman Empire... and by the time Nicephorus rose to the throne of Byzantium the western empire had fallen unless you consider the frankish kingdom of Charlemagne a true successor to the western empire. The Byzantines did retake Rome and defend it from the Goths but if your referring to the sacking of Rome in 410, 455 and the subesquent fall of the west in 476 you must remember that both halves weren't always on good terms. Also the fact that the eastern empire was at almost continual war with the Sassanids and the distance from Constantinople to Rome didnt help that much either.
  15. i believe you do need to have barbarian invasion. type 'Imperium Julianorum' in the search bar at a site called www.twcenter.net it should come up there witha few threads on it.
  16. i just downloaded an extremely fun and historically accurate mod.. its called 'Imperium Julianorum' its only a beta and it is being updated constantly but its really good... id reccomend it for anyone who is familiar with the last pagan emperor Julian the Apostate or who prefer the later roman empire... the map is extended all the way to the indus valley to cover the entire Sassanid empire and the roman empire is one instead of two making it alot of fun. Armenia has also been added as a faction sitting dangerously in between the roman and sassanid empires. Just a great overall mod who id recommend to anyone
  17. But MAYBE , you never know... did Belisarius ever get much of his wealth back after it was confiscated??
  18. maybe Belisarius pocketed some?? it is said he was one of if not the richest man in the empire compared to the emperor..

    Roman dentistry

that skull doesnt look real though.... but about the dentistry...wow..
  20. it was obviosuly difficult to conquer Tyre because of its geographic position being on an island. Also the fact that it was held by the Phoenicians the best mariners of the time...with constrol of the sea tyre was impossible to take and i very much doubt the babylonians had much of a navy. i dont think Alexander was that great during this siege. Tyre was going to fall eventually because they were outnumbered and had only a small number of ships at the time.. food was going to run short and with the constant attacks by Alexanders men Tyre had no chance. (i.e alexander is really my area)
  21. When Belisarius conquered the vandals he did return many of the treasures to Constantinople. The Jewish candelabra was returned to Jerusalem as the rabbis in constnatinople said if it wasnt bad luck would be bought upon the city.
  22. Great job Kosmo. Catholic means universal, and Orthodox means straight line in Greek. The Catholics do the sign of the cross from top-bottom-right-left. The Orthodox do it top-bottom-left-right. The Orthodox church is extremely Conservative and never change their ways. The Catholics are more seceptible to change. are u sure its right to left for catholics because i've always done it the other way same as ever catholic i know....or maybe im jsut confused LOL
  23. im just wondering how come gaul isnt that important compared to spain, illyricum etc. is this because it always got barbarian incursions or what?? at this time wasnt the senate fairly weak in its role...? like couldnt stilicho still have taken power...?
