  1. IMO the worst betrayal was the murder of Caesar...but there's probably an "official" worst betrayal in Roman history which I don't know about.
  2. Hot iron makes me drool...ok i realize that could have been taken the wrong way but...don't you just love the smell of hot metal, the feel of the hammer in your hands...and the look you get from people when they see you with that only-to-be-found-in-an-iron-shop black dirt all over your face? I don't really know much about guilds...i think there are some still around after a fashion...i guess it depends on the factory and depends on the guild.
  3. Zeke wow you are only 15? I seriously thought you were older...I'm 17 myself lol. I plan on being a blacksmith though realistically right now that will probably be a "make money on the side" kind of thing (i never could decide on ONE job to have...I wanna do it ALL!! lol)
  4. Other boards I post on have IRC channels with a "java client" so that both IRC and "non-IRC" people can access the chat. I don't know anything about how this works so I'll have to leave it to someone else to figure out how it would be set up lol
  5. http://languages.4status.net/latin/index.htm *i cannot vouch for the information on this site*
  6. awesome. i wanted to learn latin but i moved and my new school doesn't offer it. i've heard it can be a real...(explative) to learn though
  7. It's true, a certain type of gladiator (I don't know what they were called, sorry) fought with a helmet that was effectively a blindfold. What I think about it, is that it is hilarious. I would love to see it.
  8. Don't limit yourself. Just go with it. Write whatever you like ::grins::
  9. LOL!! its great though!!
  10. Oh...thank you ::blushes a little:: Ok, I'll be looking forward to yours
  11. I read it. Rome has influenced us more than most people realize. Even in my little town there are places where the architecture is somewhat Roman, and not too far away (by small redneck town in the mountains standards) there is a courthouse with Roman architecture, numerals, and writing on it. It's in our government, our language, and in some of our customs as well.
  12. I would read it I adore poetry.
  13. ::grins:: awesome. i have the SPQR on my wrist...its only in marker (yes, i draw it on every day, crazy, no?) but i plan on getting it done for real at some point. btw, welcome!
  14. hmm...i dont know about that one. what bugs me: "alchemy is a medieval pseudoscience the objective of which with the transformation of base metals into gold" (found in most school history texts and only very slightly true. leaves a lot out and there is really nothing one can do but misinterpret it)
  15. You know...somewhere I remember...reading or something...that different "branches" (army, navey, etc) used different colors. its an interesting link though
  16. Women who behave, rarely make history Exactly. To get to the heart of the matter we have to think like Romans! I honestly don't think that many of the women had problems with the way they lived because, lets face it, if they did, they would have done more. Yep. Honestly, I don't think killing off the defective babes was all *that* bad. I mean, they were saving them alot of suffering later in life as well.
  17. for what its worth, i think they were red
  18. this makes sense, but logically I would think that with the cost of red dye, it would be the other way around. Plain old whitish shirts were cheaper, and disposable. And lets face it: a shirt is not really gonna last very long in battle. The red would be more "show off the might of Rome"ish and would be more likely to be used in parades, by my thinking at least.
  19. unfortunately I forget the name of the book at the moment (and I got it from the school library grr) I think it was called something like "The Roman Army" (simple huh?) it was a big, flat book with lots of pretty pictures lol but the information seemed valid. And from what I know of Roman culture, it seems perfectly plausible.
  20. The red color (as opposed to the normal citizen's off-whitish) was symbolic of changing from citizen to soldier...the state of mind that had to change and you became something else when you put the tunic on.
  21. This site should have a chat for real time discussions, so that members can get immediate feedback and exchange ideas as well as get to know each other better. (Besides, chats are fun!)
