Centurion (DVD) – The Movie

I was satisfied with Centurion. But then, I didn’t have very high expectations for it. I had really wanted nothing but an action-adventure yarn with some great costumes and pretty females. That is exactly what I got, along with some surprisingly breathtaking locales. It is neither brilliant nor especially memorable, but there are certainly worse movies out there….

I enjoyed the first half hour of this movie, but lapsed into disinterest following the ambush scene. Yes, the locations were stunning and the basic premise of the film sound enough, but the predictably contrived storyline was a let down for me. I too feel that historical movies, depicting perfectly made up and styled women, actually do nothing to enhance the enjoyment.
Surely we don’t need supermodels in these movies, simply to ramp up the sex factor. Look at Valhalla Rising in comparison, where the characters are filthy from start to finish and still look great (accurate) for the setting and you’ll see what I mean. That movie may have not been everyone’s taste, but the locations and characters had more depth and believability, than most of the historical efforts I’ve seen for a while.
An opportunity sadly squandered, in this humble Legionnaire’s opinion.
